WFPK Presents THE DEL McCOURY BAND appearing at The Headliner’s Music Hall in Louisville!

91.9 WFPK is proud to present The Del McCoury Band and Trampled By Turtles on Saturday, February 27th at 8pm at Headliners Music Hall.  This is a rare opportunity to catch Del and the boys in a general admission club environment.

Regularly drawing crowds which run the gamut from tie-dyed’n’patchouli neo-hippie jammers, to button-down Yuppies, to suspendered good ol’ boys, the Grammy award winning, Del McCoury Band may well boast the broadest, most inclusive fan base this side of the Grateful Dead. Fifty years may have passed since Del’s first days as a bluegrass musician, but today, more than ever, The Del McCoury Band is making some of the freshest and most exciting music around.

Opening the show is Duluth, MN’s Trampled by Turtles.  These upstarts join the growing ranks of young string bands that turned off their amps and put a punk/alt-country spin on Bluegrass.  Touring in support of their newest release “Duluth”, Trampled by Turtles will bring the right energy to kick off the night.

For ticketing information, please visit: www.wfpk.org

“It is good to be the king. And that is precisely what Del McCoury—backed by arguably the most formidable bluegrass outfit in existence—remains.”

WIN TIX: Heavy Trash w/ The Ladybirds @ The Vernon Club – 11/17

Friday, November 13th, 2009

WE HAVE A PAIR OF TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY TO FOR THIS SHOW.  COMMENT BELOW WITH THE NAME YOU WOULD GIVE YOUR RECORD LABEL IF YOU EVER STARTED ONE.  (IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A RECORD LABEL, JUST USE THAT NAME.)  WE”LL ANNOUNCE A WINNER ON MONDAY MORNING.  GOOD LUCK.

Recently signed to Departure Records, The Ladybirds will be performing with Heavy Trash (NYC) at The Vernon Club on November 17, 2009.  I saw The Ladybirds at the Vernon Club not to long ago and became a fan instantly.  I highly recommend checking them out.  Heavy Trash (signed to Fat Possum) from NYC is also playing and after checking out their myspace, seeing them live  will be very intriguing.  Check out a pretty cool music video from them below.  Tix are $10 in advance and $12 day of show. You can grab tickets at www.tix.com or on sale at Vernon Club, ear-x-tacy, Underground Sounds.  The show is 18 & over and doors are 8pm.  Show starts at 9pm.

More about Heavy Trash:

Their third album, Midnight Soul Serenade (Fat Possum), is slightly darker, barrel-fermented and matured shot of Heavy Trash, with twangy, shuddering vocals layered over oozing, pulsating guitar and interjections of switch-blade riffs and crazy rhythms. Backed by their troupe of veteran tricksters, road dogs, blues wizards, punks, and evil geniuses — New York legend Simon Chardiet (double bass), Lambchop’s Sam Baker (drums), Danish rockers PowerSolo, Mickey Finn (honkytonk piano) and TN sweethearts Those Darlins — they have created a new kind of groove, a soundtrack suitable for haunted bordellos and hedonistic ho-downs.

WIN TIX: Bowerbirds w/ The Parade Schedule @ The 930 Listening Room – 11/16

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Bowerbirds are coming to Louisville’s 930 Listening Room on Monday, November 16, 2009.  If you recall, Backseat Sandbar was super excited when Bowerbirds were supposed to come to the 930 with Bon Iver back in August 2008, but the show was canceled by Bon Iver when he was added to the Wilco tour.  While last time around, the show would have been supporting the re-release of Hymns of a Dark Horse on Dead Oceans, but this time they’re out for Upper Air (Dead Oceans, July 7, 2009).  Moving from the existential themes of Hymns of a Dark Horse, Upper Air displays deeply confessional and uniquely personal experiences…no longer are they bystanders viewing the world objectively, but rather are fully engaged in the world…a sentiment no doubt developed through their extensive touring since they first hit the scene.

WE HAVE TWO PAIRS OF TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY.  TO WIN COMMENT BELOW WITH WHAT YOU THINK OUR GUESS WOULD BE AS TO THE NUMBER OF JELLY BEANS IN THIS CONTAINER:

Louisville’s The Parade Schedule will open.  Doors open @ 7:30p & show at 8p / All ages / General admission, limited seating / $10 / Tickets on sale at the930.org and ear X-tacy. Buy tickets .

WIN TIX: The Wailers @ Buster’s (Lex) – 11/10

WUKY Welcomes The Wailers

The Wailers

Together with Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. In England alone, they’ve notched up overtwenty chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries. Outside of their groundbreaking work with Marley, the Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition, the Wailers have completed innumerable other tours, playing to an estimated 24 million people across the globe. They have also been the first reggae band to tour new territories on many occasions, including Africa and the Far East.

Their nucleus formed in 1969, when Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh recruited the Barrett brothers – bassist Aston “Family Man” and drummer Carly – from Lee Perry’s Upsetters to play on hits such as Lively Up Yourself, Trenchtown Rock, Duppy Conqueror, and many more besides. Inspired by Rastafari and their ambitions of reaching an international audience, this is the line-up that pioneered roots rock reggae, and signed to Island Records in 1971. Bunny and Peter left two years later. It was at this point that the in-demand Barrett brothers – whose rhythms also underpinned innumerable seventies’ reggae hits by other acts – assumed the title of Wailers, and backed Marley on the group’s international breakthrough album, Natty Dread.

Under Family Man’s musical leadership, they then partnered Bob Marley on the succession of hit singles and albums that made him a global icon, winner of several Lifetime Achievement awards, and Jamaica’s best-loved musical superstar.

Drummer Carlton “Carlie” Barrett died in 1987, leaving his brother as the main beneficiary of the Wailers’ mantle. Subsequent line-ups have revolved around Family Man, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest bass players. Modest and unassuming, he was present on all of those unforgettable performances by Bob Marley & The Wailers from the seventies. He and lead singer Elan Attias form the main axis of the current Wailers – a group that’s one of the last, great reggae institutions, yet which refuses to live off past glories. That’s because whereas Family Man represents tried and trusted roots authenticity, Elan injects fresh excitement into a show that continues to attract enthusiastic audiences from around the world.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Elan was discovered by Wailers’ guitarist Al Anderson, and first sang with the band in 1997. After a brief hiatus to record his acclaimed debut album Together As One, produced by No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, he was soon called home by the Wailers’ mesmerising rhythms, and the opportunity to revisit those landmark reggae hits. Since reuniting with them, Elan has seamlessly worked some of his own songs into their repertoire, and also formed a joint production venture with Family Man that’s designed to extend the Marley legacy yet further, and branch out into all areas of contemporary music. By way of example, their first project – which promises to be a revelation – is a new Wailers’ album featuring some of the biggest names in popular music. Prepare to be amazed!
