ALBUM REVIEW: Skyscraper Stereo- You Can't Do That on Television

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Louisville’s Skyscraper Stereo recently released their second album, You Can’t Do That on Television, and it is one that you should check out (grab a copy at ear x-tacy).  This album blends old-school hip-hop with samples that would make Public Enemy proud.  Spin Magazine decribed them as “a much needed spanking to the Louisville hip-hop scene” and SS shows love for the city with the track “502 (I Love You).”  They even brought in our favorite local DJ duo, Azns n Bnzs, for the track “Get By.”  There is no question that the samples drive this album, but SS’s laid back, yet carefully constructed rhymes and danceable beats set this effort apart from other’s who have tried in the past.  Just throw the CD on and enjoy all the way through.  No track skipping necessary.

Track List:

  1. Intro
  2. 502 (I Love You)
  3. I’ll Be Good to You
  4. Bust Out Your Jeans
  5. Anytime, Anyplace
  6. Channel Surfing
  7. Get By ft. Azns n Bnzs
  8. Illegal Woman
  9. Everybody Else
  10. My Brother n Me
  11. Easy
  12. Come Out of the Rain
  13. Put Em Up

Plenty To Do This Weekend (here is your guide)…

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

There is a ton of stuff to do this weekend, here are a few options…

FRIDAY

Dave Matthews Band & Willie Nelson, Slugger Field:

Then hit the afterparty at DCE with Lotus Blake and The Dealbreakers (free with DMB stub)…

or

If you need an electronic fix with some 8-bit/chipbreak fun, don’t miss Ultra Pulverize, William Sides Atari Party, Kentucky Prophet and more at The Rud.

or

If you want something more laid back, go to Lisa’s and see Edgehill Ave., Grooveshire and Hambone…

or

Check out the view from the top of Glassworks and enjoy music from Black Diamond Heavies and Broken Spurs…

or

For a different scene, check out Grinstead, Consume Comsumer & more at PHT (but you have to go to PHT).

or

If you need an all ages show, hit up Skull Alley to see Fellow Project, Racebannon and Millions…

or

For some DJ’s, Hip-Hop and art, go to the Clay Buffet on Clay Street, where you’ll find Azns n Bnzs and Skyscraper Stereo…

or

Head on down to the Belvedere (where Forecastle was) for some Bluegrass.  This is a two day fest.

SATURDAY

If you are looking for a similar ‘Funtown’ environmen, We Drink Old Gold is hosting the Fleur de lis Field Day out on a farm.  It looks to be a great way to spend the day outdoors and enjoy the music of Scott Carney (Wax Fang), Whistle Peak and more…

and/or

There really is only one place to be on Saturday night and that is at The 930 listening to Grizzly Bear!  The next day they will be playing at the Verizon Music Center with Radiohead, so it will be nice to see them at such a small venue.  Also, they just played Letterman on the 23rd, so they must be good, right?

or

If the 930 isn’t your vibe, or if you can’t get over that Friend isn’t as good as Yellow House, then go to the Pour Haus, where you are rarely disappointed, to see The Genius File, Suspected Terrorists and The Kickback from South Dakota.

SUNDAY

If you can make the drive to Indy’s Verizon Music Center and can find tickets, this is your chance to catch Radiohead on their US tour (playing with Grizzly Bear)…

or

If you are staying put in Louisville, you can catch Sugar Spell it Out and Ellison at The Brickhouse…

THANKS: Backseat Sandbar's The Incident at the Pour Haus

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Friday night was the one year anniversary of Backseat Sandbar’s first post & to celebrate the occasion the Pour Haus was host to The Instruction, The Zero Element, Skyscraper Stereo & Azns n Bnzs, all of whom just shredded the night & made it a party to remember (save for the effect of the PBR). Throwing our first party, we had no idea what to expect, but I feel that I can come away with it feeling that (1) it was an awesome and successful night, and (2) we have a lot to learn about throwing parties.

With that in mind, we’d like to take a moment out to THANK everyone who came to the show, friends, fans and readers of our blog, fans and friends of the bands, loyal patrons to the Pour Haus, and kids generally in the music scene, and both of our girlfriends for putting up with the the time we invest into this blog. However, none of the night would have been possible without the help of so many people. First, we’ve got to thank Ace, Robin, Clint & Dominic at The Pour Haus….they made the show as easy to organize as to show up for, from the free admission, to guarding the door, to the discounted drinks which we bought by the 30 pack. We’d like to thank each of the bands for bringing their friends, for playing an incredible show and making that party so damn successful in terms of attendance and fun. Essentially, the point of Backseat Sandbar is to promote the music that we’d want to see live and hear, and thanks to each of these bands, this party was exactly the type of party we’d want to go see…exemplifying the very point of why we’re doing this. We’d like to particularly thank Wes, Rahman, Jawon, and Chris, whom we’ve befriended over the last year, for convincing their respective band mates to do this party for free. Lastly, we’d like to give special thanks to Chris & Andrew of Azns n Bnzs who played a sick set, and caused me to end up with cake all over my face and in my hair and up my nose. Thanks for the cake guys….that was awesome…

If you missed the show, I think you’re likely to get a chance to see each of these bands again soon. Several people in attendance were the people you find putting on shows and promoting around town, and more than one time I had someone come up to me to ask about helping to arrange another show with this band or that. Perhaps the best thing about the night was the cross-section of music that resulted in a lot of people hearing bands they might not otherwise have seen. Countless of you asked about finding out more about these bands or getting their album. I couldn’t tell you how many demo CDs I could have sold on the behalf of each of these bands..and when I say that I mean every single artist we had playing…I had several people from unrelated groups of friends ask me about each individual band and where they could see them next (of course, read the blog was the only real answer). I was elated to find the members of each band so strongly digging the sound of every other band playing….standing in the audience and talking about arranging future shows together. We accidentally reunited old high school friends, we talked to a cat sporting the Zach Morris cell phone, we each bought 45 beers at a bar (haven’t done that before), but most of all, we had a great time.

Again, the turnout was great and the party was massively fun, but I’m sure we can go bigger and get more of Louisville out, so expect to see more events like this popping up now and then….

Backseat Sandbar. Party. Pour Haus. This Friday.

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

In case you haven’t heard yet, Backseat Sandbar turns ONE on FRIDAY, May 23rd and we’re having a party to celebrate. For the occasion, The Zero Element, Skyscraper Stereo, The Instruction, and DJ duo Azns n Bnzs are going to play at The Pour Haus (1481 S. Shelby Street).  The show is absolutely FREE and PBR is going to be a buck and a quarter.  Because there are four groups playing, we are starting things off at 9pm sharp, and I’m telling you, you do not want to miss any of these artists.  The genre of each group is different.  There will be rock, dance rock, hip-hop and some house party music on the turntables.  It is gonna be an all around good time and we hope to see all of you out there!!

Backseat Sandbar presents…. Zero Element, Skyscraper Stereo, The Instruction, Azns n Bnzs @ The Pour Haus – 5/23

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Backseat Sandbar turns 1 on May 23rd & we’re having a little party to celebrate. For the occasion, The Zero Element, Skyscraper Stereo, The Instruction, and DJ duo Azns n Bnzs are going to play at The Pour Haus. The show is meant to provide a cross section of the Louisville Music scene genre-wise, and we specifically chose each band as the embodiment of this scene…whether you’ve heard of any or all of these guys or not….

For the evening, the already incredibly cheap drinks are going to be even cheaper at $1.25 PBR & $3.25 well drinks. The Instruction is going to head on stage first right at 9. I know its the first band an all….but we only chose bands we really liked and you’d be missing out by coming late. These guys recently won a local “Battle of the Bands” at Headliners. When we met them & received their CD, we were instantly hooked. We reviewed it HERE. Everyone we’ve played the album for asks if it is Matt Berninger of The National singing. Interested? After that, we’ve got The Zero Element. The Zero Element just got two forms of shoutout from People Noise. The first was in our Take 5 series, when Zeke answered that The Zero Element was one of his favorite Louisville bands, and the second was asking them to open last Friday’s show at The Pink Door. Next up is local hip hop heads Skyscraper Stereo who rap about more than guns and drugs, and are known to occasionally do it over 8-bit beats. Lastly, our good friends Azns n Bnzs, whose last show we promoted was the incredible Clay Buffett in March, where they performed alongside Skyscraper Stereo. Cheap drinks, good music, good venue, and free admission should make for an all-around awesome night…

For an idea of how far we’ve come…our first post on May 23rd, 2007 was a youtube video about a talented beer pong player. Louisville has embraced Backseat Sandbar far more than we ever anticipated & we intend to keep going strong….going to more and more shows and doing more and more concert reviews, and bringing all the information that you actually care about to one spot.

We hope to see all of you kids out at The Pour Haus on May 23rd…in the meantime, have a sampling of the talent…
