We are going on a road trip tomorrow morning to meet up with 80,000 of our friends in Manchester, Tennessee for Bonnaroo 2010! We are taking two cameras with us and about a terabyte worth of storage space so we promise to bring back lots of pics. We obviously won’t be blogging much while we are down there, so if you need a fix while we are gone, head over to our twitter accounts for some live coverage and photos:
The ship, if you will, has all the bands on board now and the last to arrive, fashionably late, is none other than THE SMASHING PUMPKINS! They will be headlining Saturday night (July 10th) of the festival (right after DEVO…can you imagine?). Going 90′s super-band rounds out a perfectly balanced festival. Friday you have your jam bands with a folky-country rock flavor (Widespread/Drive-by Truckers/Lucero). Saturday you have a blast from the past with The Smashing Pumpkins, DEVO, Cake and Cap’n Jazz (with a bunch of great indie bands including Wax Fang). Then close everything off with a huge bang from modern acts like The Flaming Lips, Spoon, She & Him, and Ted Leo, supported by more great Louisville acts like The Fervor, Dawn Landes, The Pass, The Ravenna Colt and The Commonwealth. Each day is beautiful in its own way and will provide something everyone can enjoy. This will no doubt go down as one of the best festivals this year and one of the best Louisville has ever seen.
A breakdown of the music lineup can be found here: http://forecastlefest.com/lineup, including live performance videos from each Forecastle artist.
Forecastle’s 2010 keynote speaker will be Rob Coughlin, former President of The Surfrider Foundation – a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Rob also served as Chairman of Conservationists for Jimmy Carter, Special Assistant for the US Environmental Protection Agency, and as a Board Member for the Conservation League and Solar California Council. He speaks on numerous environmental topics, including endangered species, population stabilization, ocean protection, the history of the American environmental movement, and individuals making a difference.
Three day passes, priced at $150, and single day tickets, priced at $60, are on sale now at http://www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000. They are also available at ear-X-tacy in Louisville, Shake-It Records in Cincinnati, CD Central in Lexington, Indy CD and Vinyl in Indianapolis, and Grimey’s in Nashville. Exclusive boat slips, VIP packages, and other premium ticketing options are also available, as well as campground accommodations and on-site hotel rooms. Visit www.forecastlefest.com for details, along with directions, campground, lodging information, and more!

Born in Tennessee and raised in Louisville, KY, Matthew Cooper relocated to Portland, OR several years back and has since spent many a night holed up in his house transforming the vibrations in his brain into sweeping walls of elegant noise. With a depth ranging from fragile to glacial, he takes dense layers of guitars and pianos and builds them into an awe-inspiring fortress around himself. Resting comfortably and confidently in the spirits of Brian Eno’s most accomplished ambient pieces, Eluvium is a freakishly beautiful affair. If it was ever possible for a warm gust of wind to send chills through every bone in your body, then Eluvium is that warm wind.
Sorry for the drought in posts, I’ve been swamped at work, but I’ll pick it up for y’all next week. In the meantime, here is some good news. Sharon Jones has a new album, I Learned the Hard Way, out April 6th and she will be on tour with The Dap Kings starting tomorrow. They closest she will get to us is The Southgate House (Newport, KY) on May 17th. We were at her show at Louisville’s Headliner’s and she blew the roof off the place. It will be worth the short trip (or go to Nashville on 5/14 or Indy on 5/23).

Louisville, Kentucky trio Wax Fang are on a roll. Pavement has invited them to play the All Tomorrows Parties festival in the UK in May. In addition to both BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens and the NME each hosting Wax Fang at one of their famed club nights in London, Wax Fang’s UK tour will also see them record a BBC session at the legendary Maida Vale studio. Add to that some recent successful shows at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, two more festival appearances and another dozen UK dates and things are getting busy for Wax Fang.
Wax Fang has also penned a record deal with Absolutely Kosher Records. The Bay Area label, now in its twelfth year of business, will re-release the band’s full length La La Land on CD, digitally and for the first time, on vinyl LP in gorgeous gatefold on May 10, 2010 in the UK and on May 11, 2010 in the U.S. The next 12 months will see an all new release cycle featuring an upcoming EP on a label to be announced, and another forthcoming full length on Absolutely Kosher Records. Singer/guitarist Scott Carney, drummer Kevin Ratterman and bassist Jacob Heustis are currently in their Louisville studio working on both forthcoming records.
La La Land is one of those great unsung records that just won’t go away. It’s been launched twice by the band (the second time after formal distribution was secured) and achieved accolades from Spin, the BBC, the Onion A.V. Club, FADER & URB. The group’s anthemic art rock earned them the notices of Spoon and fellow Louisvillians My Morning Jacket, both of whom invited the band to support them. More UK dates to be announced soon.

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS today announced their 2010 North American tour and the upcoming release of Mojo, their first studio album in eight years, set for release on Reprise Records this spring. The North American tour, produced by Live Nation, will take the band through a mix of top arenas and amphitheaters across the US and Canada beginning May 6th in Raleigh, NC.
Special guest artists on the tour will include a mix of appearances by My Morning Jacket, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joe Cocker, ZZ Top, and Drive-By Truckers.
All 2010 Tour tickets purchased online will include an MP3 download of every track on the Heartbreakers’ electrifying new album, Mojo. It will work like this; once fans purchase tickets online they will receive an email with codes entitling them to download two tracks from Mojo (“First Flash Of Freedom” and “Good Enough.”) Then, on the release date of the album, currently slated for this spring, ticket buyers will be sent a download of the entire album. Also included with every online ticket purchase, to be delivered at the end of the 2010 tour, will be a selection of live tracks recorded during the tour.
Mojo is a fiery statement from a band that is making some of their most exciting music over three decades into their career. “Good Enough” from the new album is now available for streaming at the revamped TOMPETTY.com. More details on the new album to follow soon.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, their first year of eligibility, and in recent years have continued to build on their already legendary success. The band’s sold-out 2008 tour was the biggest of their career and came right after the band’s acclaimed Super Bowl XLII halftime performance with a worldwide audience of nearly a billion people. The 2009 release of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ career spanning Live Anthology garnered glowing reviews including a rave four and a half stars from Rolling Stone. The 2007 release of the Peter Bogdanovich-directed documentary Runnin’ Down A Dream earned a Grammy award and established the Heartbreakers’ story as a striking embodiment of the American Dream.
TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS released their debut album in 1976. They have since sold more than 60 million records. Between the Heartbreakers’ recordings and his solo work, Tom Petty has received 18 Grammy nominations and been honored with lifetime achievement awards including Billboard’s Century Award, MTV’s Video Vanguard Award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tom Petty, with the Heartbreakers at his side, has become a rock and roll icon lauded by fellow musicians and music lovers worldwide. Tom Petty’s Sirius/XM radio show, Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure, is one of the most beloved and popular shows on satellite radio. It features Tom Petty spinning favorite tunes from his extensive private music collection.
Holiday Shores and Twin Sister are going to be heading back our way after their SXSW romp and will be stopping into Louisville’s Nachbar on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 10pm. You are probably going to be at the Nachbar anyway, but hey, you can’t go wrong with a free show and especially this show. Holiday Shores and Twin Sister are two quickly rising bands that have been subject to a lot of buzz. If you saw the Holiday Shores play with the Evangelicals at Glassworks not too long ago, then you know what I’m talking about. I haven’t seen Twin Sister, but from what I’ve heard they need to be on your playlist ASAP (see MP3s below). Just two days after this show, both bands will be recording a Daytrotter Session. In short, we hope to see you there because we know you will enjoy these bands!
“Columbus’d The Whim is the first first full-length album from Pemberton’s Holiday Shores, who, like the street that bears their name, are quintessentially summer: chimey guitars, reverb-soaked vocals, warbling Rhodes, echoes of years past. The album, packed with 10 could-be singles, reads like a book of Pemberton’s well-written memories. Each word chosen meaningfully with a linguist’s touch; each sentence constructed carefully with an artist’s ear. Columbus’d The Whim is a literary work in addition to a sonic one.” – Two Syllables
“Pushing off with a short stretch of vocal harmonizing that somehow echoes Fleet Foxes, opener “Reruns” actually takes on shades of early Shins songs, another Phil Ek-assisted band. Those hooks were spit-polished and very much in tune to the weird bubbles James Mercer zipped them up in. The same kind of relationship between sonics, structure, and environment can be found here….” – Pitchfork Review
New York five-piece Twin Sister are currently are offering a free digital EP called Vampires With Dreaming Kids (how can you vampire fans resist?), featuring this dreamily psychedelic and spacious song, “I Want a House”, which centers around some lovely harmonies. Check out some more songs at their MySpace, and if you’re in the NYC area, they’ve got some shows coming up in the next few months, including dates with Pure Ecstasy.

There’s a blue Beetle in the rear view and a roach burning a hole in our upholstery. It’s a new year of Achievers, dude. It’s the new year of Lebowski Fest.
As every diehard Lebowski fan knows (“Achievers” is their preferred nomenclature) Lebowski Fest follows a thousand years of beautiful tradition. First, a night of music, live entertainment, and a screening of The Big Lebowski; then, a night of unlimited bowling with massive costume and trivia contests. Drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds, this year, the Lebowski Fest will be throwing these what-have-yous in a half-dozen cities across the country. Each Fest has been strategically located (throwing darts at a map of the US), and are being held on the weekends, as to provide for a destination one will never forget.
Pack up your dirty undies and mix yourself a White Russian dude – 2010 is the year of the marmot.

Phoenix blew up last year, won a Grammy this year, and now they are heading on tour with a stop in Louisville. They are playing at The Palace, which is fine, but I bet the tickets will be pricey. I saw their set at Bonnaroo last year and it was pretty good (about just as good as their SNL appearance). If you are a fan, and have the change, go for it. I’ll update ticket info once it is available.

A full album stream of Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore’s record, Dear Companion, can be found on the band’s website all this week leading up to their February 16th release date!
Dear Companion is a collaboration between three Kentucky musicians: the songs are written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia.
A portion of the proceeds from Dear Companion will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal and finding a better way forward. Learn more at: www.ilovemountains.org or www.subpop.com
