Cults w/ Maps & Atlases @ Southgate House – 8/18

We are super excited about this show.  We’ve been fans of Maps & Atlases for a while and they were a draw in their own regard, but adding Cults to the bill makes this a must see show.  They won us over with their epic single “Go Outside” and we have been begging for more ever since.  The “Go Outside” 7″ is sold out, so if you find it (or want to sell it), give us a shout ASAP!!!  We are waiting with baited breath for the full length.  Check out “Go Outside” below.  (After, check out our buddy Brian Healey a/k/a brainbheat’s remix of “Go Outside). We also included a Maps & Atlases track just in case you have been living under a rock.  Enjoy and make the trip to the Southgate House with us on August 18th.  It’s my dad’s birthday, so I hope he doesn’t mind (or wants to go to the show)!

REAL TALK: R. Kelly Coming to KY (Palace – 11/20)

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

http://westsidewill.com/newblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/R-Kelly.jpg

Ladies Make Some Noise Tour

R. Kelly, the three-time Grammy winning king of R&B, makes music of epic proportions. After 18 years of stardom, the multi-instrumentalist, producer and vocalist continues to forge an artistic path that caters to fantasy and captures the hearts of adoring fans, which is in essence, how an artist sells over 34 million records, and wears the crown of a king.

The charts are telling of the Chicago native’s storied success— six #1 albums, 11 #1 singles, and 12 consecutive platinum albums. Yet, beyond the numbers is his vital contribution to the soul music continuum. R. Kelly’s musical tome is ripe with scintillating delivery and stirring rhythms that outlast thinner melodies by fleeting one-hit sensations. In one moment, he is the virtuoso that delves into slow, deep delicious seduction, and the next finds him the sexy showman at the center of the party, in full body-rocking up-tempo flavor. From the tantalizing eight-times platinum R., to the Grammy-award winning anthem “I Believe I Can Fly,” to his recent hit single “I’m a Flirt” with Bow Wow that garnered a 2008 ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Award, R. Kelly is the essence of true R&B.

The genius of R. Kelly rests in his willingness to break from traditional formula and constantly push the envelope. He flips the method of the moment with undeniable swagger and bold hip-hop sensibility. As a skilled collaborator, he pairs vocals with countless artists — Snoop Dogg, T.I. and Usher among them. With Usher, he performed “Same Girl,” which was a Rolling Stone Best Song of the Year in 2007. Always willing to venture in new directions, his latest duet pairs him with the coquettish persona of Keri Hilson.

As a songwriter, R. Kelly revisits simple, but profound aspects of the human experience – love, lust, desire, joy and pain that define classical art and drama. He applies his concept to rich, full vocals that exude his intended effect. This precise craftsmanship led to a 2006 Stevie Wonder Award for Outstanding Achievements in Song Writing at the Soul Train Awards.

It is this uncanny ability to compose classics and deliver electrifying live performances that define everything that is essential R. Kelly. It’s why he is the recipient of multiple Billboard, BMI and American Music Awards. A prolific artist, he churns out albums on a yearly basis from his Chocolate Factory studios in the heart of Chicago, drawing from the spirit of his musical forefathers Curtis Mayfield and Donnie Hathaway. While, R. Kelly proudly hails from the so-called Second City, with his boundless talent, he is second to none.

Ben Sollee & Jim James together at last

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

As it was originally scheduled, last Thursday Ben Sollee and Jim James were supposed to donate their musical abilities in promotion of Barack Obama at the Louisville Water Tower.  Since that didn’t happen, we’ve got the exclusive on the next best thing, which is a new track by Ben Sollee and who else but Jim James sings backup.  That’s right, it seems Jim is quite a fan of our new shooting star.  The following tracks are from the new EP from Ben called Something Worth Keeping, which will be available at the Nov 1st show at the 930 Listening Room and shortly on Itunes.

Here is what Ben has to say about the new EP…

“The beauty of people is anchored in imperfection; it is not that we are destructive but that we are ignorant to a better way. We dream big with even bigger costs. Furthermore, we learn the lesson daily that we don’t know what we have until it is gone. Combined, these two qualities are child-like but ever present.

When I look around I see a lot of things that are worth keeping: the mountain tops of Appalachia, family and community farms, art and music in schools, and, most of all, a government by the people and for the people. But how? The challenge that our leaders and us face is that we don’t know how to accomplish these goals. There are many eloquent ideas out there about renewable energy, educational systems, and governing, but realizing them means trying new things; which is daunting at least, and terrifying at most. As my generation takes the reins we should not sacrifice some qualities of this nation and the land in its boundaries to the wayfaring spirit of economy. They are important for Americans, our children, and the rest of the world.

These thoughts inspired these two new songs. But they are only songs…” – Ben Sollee

Ben Sollee Remixed

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

DJ 2nd Nature is at it again, remixing another one of Louisville’s favorite musicians. Recently, just before his appearance at the Forecastle Music Festival, the Atlanta DJ turned the epic “One Big Holiday” by My Morning Jacket into an 8-bit refraction of itself. This time, he works with the masterful cellist Ben Sollee and our favorite presidential candidate to produce a unique kind of remix.  Here is what Ben had to say about it all…

I wrote A Few Honest Words with the idea that so much could be accomplished with more sincere and honest dialogue among our political representatives. Barack Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention revitalized this notion. His words were equal parts grounding and uplifting. Obama is not scratching his way to the top of this election, but is riding on a wave of believers that love his story and admire the direction he aspires to lead this country. So, in collaboration with Atlanta’s DJ 2nd Nature, we have produced this remix which draws on some of Obama’s own words.

Ben Sollee v. DJ 2nd Nature - Obama’s Honest Words

Now, for all things Ben Sollee….Ben also recently wrote a short essay on why he believes in Obama over at Largehearted Boy, he is about to head out on tour as well to promote his debut album, Learning to Bend.

1 Nov – Louisville KY / 930 Listening Room w/ Bootsie Ann
5 Nov – Nashville TN / The Basement
6 Nov – Atlanta GA / The 5 Spot
7 Nov – Chapel Hill NC / Nightlight
8 Nov – Washington DC / Iota
11 Nov – Brooklyn NY / Union Hall
12 Nov – New York NY / Mercury Lounge
13 Nov – Philadelphia PA / World Cafe Live (low dough show)
17 Nov – Chicago IL / Schuba’s
18 Nov – Minneapolis MN / 400 Club
24 Nov – San Francisco CA / Café Du Nord
25 Nov – Los Angeles CA, Hotel Café

Additionally, the incredible Keith Robbins has been capturing loads of video of some incredible performances recently, including Ben at the recent Waterfront Wednesday…
