Amplive is giving away Rainydayz Remixes, his remix album of Radiohead’s In Rainbows. You can grab the album HERE. There was some trouble getting this album out, as it was created initially without authorization. Here’s what Amplive’s record label had to say:
After a cease & desist put the breaks on Amplive’s Radiohead In Rainbows remix project, the online music community reasonably wondered if the tracks would ever see the light of day. Well, here they are.
While the Oakland producer/DJ acknowledges that he probably should have contacted Radiohead (who were not involved in the project) to seek approval prior to making his interpretations publicly available, an agreement has been reached between all involved parties and Amplive has been granted permission to release Rainydayz Remixes for free to the general public. Effective immediately, the eight-track record is available here.
Rainydayz Remixes is composed exclusively of source material pulled from In Rainbows, re-envisioned by Amplive and complimented by vocal work from Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5, Codany Holiday, and Del The Funky Homosapien.
The tracklisting:
Rainydayz
Video Tapez (ft. Del The Funky Homosapien)

Weird Fishez
All I Need

Ratatat is also giving away his much acclaimed Remixes Vol. II available on Rapidshare.

Stuart David posted a new message today in the forums at Looperama
Hi
I’ve been thinking of releasing the new Looper album through We7, Peter Gabriel’s new thing where the audience can download the music for free, but the artists still get paid. (And paid more than they do for a $0.99 track on iTunes too.)
I’d be interested to find out what you all think of it. I put the first Looper MP3 EP on there as a trial, and it would be great if as many people as possible could sign up and download it to see how they feel about it. (It also means we’ll get paid every time you download one of those old tracks too.)
The address for the main site, to read more about it is:
Let me know what you think, and it would be great if you could give us some reviews on there as well.
Thanks,
Stuart
Stuart was the first artist I knew of who was big (admittedly my perception of what music is BIG is distorted) who put his albums up for free. I’d already spoken to that HERE when I spoke about Radiohead. The music industry is changing and while he’s quiet and would never admit it, I think Stuart is quietly leading the charge. Anyway, I’ve spoken with him several times through the forum & he’s the nicest guy. So if you don’t already have the albums, go to the linnks above and get them for free. Particularly “Pale Blue E-Type”, “Strangest Girl” and “Play the One I Like” are all AMAZING. Plus, the guy gave his last album away without asking for anything, so download it free in a way that gets him paid. I’ve been waiting for this new album for 2 years now.
Putting sponsorship money in its right place (presumably). Now this is the REAL FUTURE of music.
Local band, Digby, played a few songs at Ear-x-tacy Friday night before their show at 4th Street Live for the Homegrown Music Series. They were promoting their new album Why Not Plastic. In what seems to be a new trend (see Radiohead- In Rainbows), Why Not Plastic is downloadable for FREE here. You name the price to help Digby pay the bills.
Laser shows are offered every Friday night at Gheens Science Hall & Planetarium. Ticket prices are reasonable, and the shows are amazing. Three shows are offered and I recommend you buy the three show package. One show = $7 bucks, two shows = $13 bucks, all three shows = $19. Here is the line-up:
9:00pm Beatles
10:00pm Radiohead
11:00pm Pink Floyd- The Wall
The planetarium is located at 108 West Brandeis Ave.
The son of a preacher and a teacher, Saul Williams, one of my favorite artists of all time, whom I’ve followed since 1999 when I first saw Slam, is releasing “The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust” on November 1st. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails (who has also said screw you to the recording industry) produced the album. Trent & Saul have been working together for at least a few years now, and toured together extensively. While I love Moving Units, I was unfortunate to see them when the very next show Saul started touring with NIN. However, on another occassion I saw Saul in Lexington for Black History Month, and he was on fire.
Go ahead & sign up now, you’ll be sent a link on Nov. 1 on how to get the album.
I say that this is like Radiohead, but more practical because the way Saul and Trent are moving this album is at 2 price points…you can get it absolutely free, or you can pay $5. They don’t think anyone should pay more than that, and if you want to support the artist, you can pay $5, but if you don’t care about that you can get it free. This keeps them from getting $1 or 30 cents or something like that for the album where the transaction fee is likely to eat that entire amount up and waste their time. These people are not beggars…pay them or don’t pay them. But if we want to promote this channel of distribution, we can cough up $5. Also, if you fork over the $5, you have your choice of 192 kbps, 320 kbps, or flac (lossless), so that is another strong incentive. Of course all of the formats are DRM-free. Interestingly, with Radioheadmore people have illegally downloaded the album (its free people!) than have legally downloaded it. It’s a crazy world. Anyway, when I get home, I’ll add pictures of the Saul Williams performance in Lexington that I saw.
The tracklist is:
01 Black History Month
02 Convict Colony
03 Tr(n)igger
04 Sunday Bloody Sunday
05 Break
06 NiggyTardust
07 DNA
08 WTF!
09 Scared Money
10 Raw
11 Skin of a Drum
12 No One Ever Does
13 Banged and Blown Through
14 Raised to be Lowered
15 The Ritual
The closest Saul will be coming is Chicago on Nov. 11. Unfortunately that’s a sunday so I can’t justify the trip. The tour schedule is:
11-02 Pullman, WA – Washington State University
11-07 London, England – Bardens Boudoir
11-09 Zurich, Switzerland – Tonhalle
11-12 New York, NY – The Box
11-13 Storrs, CT – University of Connecticut
11-14 Bridgeport, CT – Housatonic Community College
11-17 Chicago, IL – Studio E
01-23 Laramie, WY – University of Wyoming
02-01 Fairfax, VA – George Mason University
02-15 Tacoma, WA – Pacific Lutheran University
As good as his music is, as good as his acting is (Slam, K-Pax), his poetry is far and away the best…check a few of them out here and buy it here. Also, friend him on myspace here.
Or, if you’ve never read his open letter to Oprah Winfrey, it’s been reproduced over at Stereogum.
Lastly, some of his stuff you can audibly here. All of these below are HIGHLY recommended!!!!
You fill in the blanks. Radiohead is offering its new album “In Rainbows” in a download format for whatever price you want to pay. It is available here:
You have to set the price in Pounds, but there is a converter. The download includes the entire album, except for bonus material included in the discbox (selling for £40, or roughly $81). Regardless, since you set the price, it has to be worth it. Pitchfork has a great collection of videos of Radiohead performing these songs live:
- Late note…THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING. I JUST LISTENED TO IT FROM START TO FINISH AND WAS BLOWN AWAY. GET IT NOW. NOW.
UPDATED: (cory) In case you’re not aware, Radiohead is just the first of a long line of artists giving it to the Recording Industry. So far, Trent Reznor has decided to go record label free (following rumors of Nine Inch Nailsdisbanding, as has Oasis, Jamiroquaiand Madonna. Truth is though, Looper (Stuart David, co-creator of Belle & Sebastian) did this years ago with the release of the MP3 albums, which you can find here (amazing). These artists are realizing that the role of the stagnant recording industry has been marginalized by the advent of the internet, and the recording industry’s inability to keep the pace with the internet’s leveling effect. As long as net neutrality is maintained, the RIAA keeps up its dirty tactics, and Records labels take the sort of % cuts they do, they’re going to drive themselves into irrelevance. I say out with the old, and in with the new.
