The 2010 Bonnaroo line-up was announced yesterday. Check out the full schedule, but here is a look at a few of the shows that we know already we wont want to miss (with quick 4 word preview):
I’m too sick to my stomach right now to even speculate what will be said at a press conference on Friday held by ear x-tacy’s owner John Timmons. The press release (below) only says that potential changes to ear x-tacy will be addressed. The tone of the release was not encouraging. Ear x-tacy is too important to lose, not only for the local music scene, but the Louisville community at whole. From now until Friday, lets make a pact. For every album you would go buy online (or “borrow” online) and for every album you would purchase at Best Buy, go to Ear x-tacy this week and pick it up (they even have a digital online music store). We’ll start there and then work our way forward. I’ve been collecting vinyl for a while now and there is no greater feeling than flipping through the stacks at ear X-tacy, finding that “gem” and enriching the collective music experience by knowing that you are contributing to something you love so much. We can start tonight. Louisville’s own The Watson Twins are playing an in-store show tonight at 5pm (I just got off the phone with ear x and the show is on despite the snow). Enjoy some great music and buy that album you’ve been thinking about all week. That is all for now. I’ll be at the press conference on Friday and I’ll let everyone know what I find out. Feel free to voice your opinions below. We need to show our support.
Via a press release:
ear X-tacy Owner Addresses Potential Changes
John Timmons, founder of the independent record store and owner for nearly 25 years, is expressing his concern for the survival of ear X-tacy, as we know it. Timmons will announce details of the store’s situation during a press conference Friday, February 12, at 10:00am, at the store,1534 Bardstown Road.
With the 10,000-square-foot prime location’s lease about to expire in March 2010, Timmons is focusing attention on the realities of a dire situation and the potential impact of losing one of the nation’s top 10 record stores. The absence of this local treasure would have a financial impact on the local media, especially public radio. It would affect concerts, promoters, and leave a void on Bardstown Road in the Highlands, an area already severely impacted by the economy’s downturn. The synergy of Louisville’s local businesses would be affected and the city’s music and cultural landscape definitely would be altered. The dynamics of “keep Louisville weird,” a local movement founded by John Timmons, would suffer from such a loss.
“This is not about business. It’s about something my customers have built and have come to expect. It’s about a place to experience music,” Timmons said. “Many tourists seem to make ear X-tacy a destination point as out-of-towners have learned about ear X-tacy through national exposure. I think the store is a place that makes Louisvillian’s proud. It’s been a community effort to build it and it’s going to take a community to sustain it.”
Those who attended last weekend’s Halfway to Forecastle festival know how thick the scene was on that night. Non-stop beats from every room, dancers in crowds and on stage, bright lights to compliment the dark rooms, and enough DJs to keep it going for hours. In the midst of the madness we managed to capture a few highlights from the show, specifically the fantastic LA Riots, for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy…
You’ve waited and waited and waited as the day drew closer. Well dust off those dancin’ shoes and Google Map this place you’re hearing be called ‘The Pointe’, because Halfway to Forecastle is finally here.
If you can’t get your DJ/electronic fix at this year’s H2F there must be something seriously wrong with you and you may want to see a doctor, as you’ve probably had a brain aneurysm in your sleep. Along with 3 stages worth of music, you can expect the other staples of the Forecastle festival, art and activism, to have a full-force presence as well.
For your artsy side, H2F promises live graffiti artists, ice sculptures, break dancing and light/laser shows by visual artist Benji Ramsey. We hope you love nautical fashion as well, cause there’s gonna be a nautical fashion show. That’s right, a NAUTICAL FASHION SHOW.
One of Forecastle’s cornerstones is the importance the festival places on activism on the local and global level. From the Forecastle website:
“An evening silent auction and raffle will be held for signed merchandise, signed poster from artist Jeff Gaither, a copy of DJ Hero, and a pair of VIP and after-party passes to the 2010 Forecastle Festival. All proceeds will benefit The Surfrider Foundation ~ an environmental non-profit dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the world’s beaches and oceans through conservation, activism, research, and education.”
And of course, the music. The entire evening will be comprised of DJs/electronic artists to ensure your aural pleasure. Here’s the line-up, and linked are our previews posted prior to the show:
H2F will take place in a venue most of us haven’t even heard of before, The Pointe (1205 E. Washington Street 40206). Get Google-mapped at the link provided. Here are the other details:

Not only is the Backseat Sandbar crew known for music blogging, but to the surprise of many we are all also fantastic dancers. If on a certain night we decide to leave the Backseat estate and take our mad dancing skillz public we can always rely on Narwhal and A. Bell, also known as the OK Deejays, to be at a given venue for an entire evening.
In this writer’s month-long+ quest to see every DJ performance in our fair city, I can easily say that the OK Deejays put on one of the best mixes of anyone I have seen. We have seen them everywhere over the past month… Zanzabar, Seidenfaden’s, some beat-down warehouse on East Main street. You name a room with four walls, they’ve played there, looked at every face, and rocked them all. Your chance to get your face rocked comes tomorrow at Halfway to Forecastle. Come see the group bringing every venue down in Louisville, brought to you by Narwhal and A. Bell… OK Deejays.
There are not enough great things we can say about Amtrak. He won our hearts at last years Forecastle Festival with a set in the inappropriately unpopulated DJ tent, mostly because of his seamless transition from a house beat into Radiohead’s “Everything In It’s Right Place”. The amazingness didn’t stop there as he continued to play a daytime set that would have kept any lover of the night at a venue until it closed, just to see what Amtrak would do next. Best of all, you’ll have an opportunity to make up for missing him at Forecastle ‘09 when he performs at this years Halfway to Forecastle, which appropriate is a night with nothing but, you guessed it, DJs and all who celebrate the art of the electronic. That’ll teach you to skip the DJ stage at Forecastle.

One of our favorite local artists and possibly the most talent person alive, Cheyenne Mize, finally has an official music MySpace page. Go add her as a friend and add all of her shows to your calendar because you really shouldn’t miss a single one. She has six songs posted and we can only hope for more.
Cheyenne fiddles around in a variety of musicks, literally and figuratively. You might see her on stage these days with Arnett Hollow, Ben Sollee, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, or Thomas A. Minor & the Picket Line. You can hear her on recordings of the above mentioned groups, as well as with Wax Fang, The Fervor, Century of Aeroplanes, The Big Time Band, Trophy Wives and hopefully an album of her own in the near future…
Dude Plays Saxophone, Douglas Lucas, Brian Beyke and Our Velocity will be at the Brick House tomorrow night (10/24). The show starts at 7pm so get there on time. It will only set you back $5 bucks. Before you go, you have to check out the music video below by Dude Plays Saxophone. Amazing!
