WRFL presents second annual 3-day experimental music and art festival
HERE ARE THE INITIAL DETAILS:
LEXINGTON, KY – WRFL 88.1, the University of Kentucky’s college and community radio station
is excited to announce that Lexington will host the second-annual Boomslang: A Celebration
of Sound & Art during the weekend of September 10-12. Boomslang is a 3-day multivenue
festival extending WRFL’s mission to bring innovative, non-commercial music of various
genres to central Kentucky, and the line-up will include a mixture of national, international, regional
and local musicians, as well as a number of satellite events celebrating experimental art
of all forms.
Additional events will include haute couture art installation, film screenings (including the Kentucky
premiere of “Secondhand Sureshots”), literary events, a kid’s music event, an interstellar
cosmic journery orchestrated by Everyone Lives Everyone Wins, and the eclectically-curious,
always exciting Boomslang Carnival.
Tickets for various events will range from free to $25, with weekend passes available for $40.
Hold your horses, tickets will soon be available at www.boomslangfest.com.
In partnership with ThinkIndie.com, this FREE digital download is a 17 song sampler of what we’ve been up to the past few years. Songs by Evergreen, Metroschifter, Straight A’s, Second Story Man, Lucky Pineapple, The Web, The Teeth, Minnow, Brett Eugene Ralph’s Kentucky Chrome Revue and more. Download it and pass it along to your friends. Go to www.louisvillenoise.com/blackbox
The ship, if you will, has all the bands on board now and the last to arrive, fashionably late, is none other than THE SMASHING PUMPKINS! They will be headlining Saturday night (July 10th) of the festival (right after DEVO…can you imagine?). Going 90′s super-band rounds out a perfectly balanced festival. Friday you have your jam bands with a folky-country rock flavor (Widespread/Drive-by Truckers/Lucero). Saturday you have a blast from the past with The Smashing Pumpkins, DEVO, Cake and Cap’n Jazz (with a bunch of great indie bands including Wax Fang). Then close everything off with a huge bang from modern acts like The Flaming Lips, Spoon, She & Him, and Ted Leo, supported by more great Louisville acts like The Fervor, Dawn Landes, The Pass, The Ravenna Colt and The Commonwealth. Each day is beautiful in its own way and will provide something everyone can enjoy. This will no doubt go down as one of the best festivals this year and one of the best Louisville has ever seen.
A breakdown of the music lineup can be found here: http://forecastlefest.com/lineup, including live performance videos from each Forecastle artist.
Forecastle’s 2010 keynote speaker will be Rob Coughlin, former President of The Surfrider Foundation – a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Rob also served as Chairman of Conservationists for Jimmy Carter, Special Assistant for the US Environmental Protection Agency, and as a Board Member for the Conservation League and Solar California Council. He speaks on numerous environmental topics, including endangered species, population stabilization, ocean protection, the history of the American environmental movement, and individuals making a difference.
Three day passes, priced at $150, and single day tickets, priced at $60, are on sale now at http://www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000. They are also available at ear-X-tacy in Louisville, Shake-It Records in Cincinnati, CD Central in Lexington, Indy CD and Vinyl in Indianapolis, and Grimey’s in Nashville. Each Note Secure in Cincy compiled a list of “must follow” twitter’ers for Cincinnati and I thought that was such a great idea, that I would do the same for Louisville. Here is what I’ve come up with. I’ve included a few regional links just so we can keep tabs on Lexington, Cincinnati and Indy. I know I’ve left a lot of people off, but just let this be a spring board. Comment with anyone that I’m leaving off and I’ll update the list. It will be a good way to get us all on the same page.

Just received this press release about ear X-tacy moving to 2226 Bardstown Road at Douglas Loop Station. Press release located below:
John Timmons, founder of the independent record store and owner for nearly 25 years, is announcing the relocation of his Bardstown Road location to 2226 Bardstown Road, at the Douglas Loop Station, in a space formerly occupied by Kinko’s/FedEx Store.ear X-tacy currently occupies space at 1534 Bardstown Road, and has been in that location for 15 years. The distance between locations is one mile.
Timmons has stated that renovation has begun, and plans to move the store will happen in early July. “I’m looking forward to a re-invention of the store, more available parking, and a rent amount that will make it possible for ear X-tacy to continue to supply music fans with what they want for many years to come. I have truly been amazed and humbled by all of the support that came after the press conference in February. The customers that built ear X-tacy over the last 25 years made it perfectly clear to me and the staff that they want us to remain in business. I can’t thank everyone enough for all of their suggestions, comments and ideas. I think they will like what they see.”
ear X-tacy’s current location is 10,000 square feet, with 8,000 of that as actual sales floor space. The new Douglas Loop location is 4,500 square feet, and Timmons is confident that there will actually be the same amount of merchandise available for sale there. “The space is one large room that will make it possible to stock just as much inventory with no wasted floor space. We will also be building a permanent elevated stage for all of our in-store performances. Parking in the Highlands has always been an issue, and I know that our customers will like the fact that there is a lot more parking available at the new location.”
ear X-tacy will celebrate its 25th anniversary the entire month of August in the new location. Month-long sales, events, and musical performances are being arranged.
Jusin Bieber will be at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati on June 26, 2010. Need I say more? Get your tickets HERE! If you are not familiar with Bieber’s amazing story, his bio is below (abridged for space). Also, he has one of the best fan videos ever. Be sure to watch it before the show (below).
A . . . soul is the last thing you would expect to find inside Justin Bieber. But all it takes is one . . . 15 year-old soul-singing phenomenon to realize that he is . . . manufactured . . .
After posting dozens of homemade videos on YouTube in 2007 . . . Justin racked up over 10,000,000 views purely from word of mouth.
. . .
In an effort to share his victory with his loved ones, Justin began posting so his . . . family could watch them,” he says. “But it turned out that other people liked them and they started subscribing to them. That’s how my manager found me. He saw me on YouTube and contacted my family and now I’m signed!”
“Scooter drove us to . . . Usher . . .,” remembers Bieber. “That was my first time . . . so I went up to him and was like, ‘Hey Usher, I love . . . you . . .’ He was like, ‘No little buddy, just come inside . . .’”
All it took was a short time . . . for Usher to realize he was in . . . “A week later Usher flew me back to Atlanta,” says Bieber. “…he really wanted . . . me then and there but I still had . . . Justin Timberlake who also wanted . . . me. It turned out Usher’s . . . was way better. He . . . and Scooter had a lot of really good connections . . . I always tease Usher now and remind him how he blew me . . . the first time we met.”
In October of 2008, Justin Bieber officially signed to Island Records. His debut album, My World is an intimate look into . . . a budding young . . . man. . .
His first single, “One Time” produced by Tricky, is about one of Justin’s favorite topics, puppy love. Usher joins Justin on “First Dance” where the two share . . . “A slow groovy song that people can dance to.” On the Midi-Mafia produced “Down to Earth” Justin digs deep to talk about growing . . . “Bigger” . . .
. . . Now I have a 4.0 grade point average and I want to go to college and just become a better person.”
. . . virtually untapped . . . Justin Bieber is primed to be a solid force . . . to come. “I think older people can appreciate my . . . heart . . . and it’s not corny,” he says. “I think I can grow . . . and my fans will grow with me.” And just think, he’s just getting started.

The 2010 Bonnaroo line-up was announced yesterday. Check out the full schedule, but here is a look at a few of the shows that we know already we wont want to miss (with quick 4 word preview):
I’m too sick to my stomach right now to even speculate what will be said at a press conference on Friday held by ear x-tacy’s owner John Timmons. The press release (below) only says that potential changes to ear x-tacy will be addressed. The tone of the release was not encouraging. Ear x-tacy is too important to lose, not only for the local music scene, but the Louisville community at whole. From now until Friday, lets make a pact. For every album you would go buy online (or “borrow” online) and for every album you would purchase at Best Buy, go to Ear x-tacy this week and pick it up (they even have a digital online music store). We’ll start there and then work our way forward. I’ve been collecting vinyl for a while now and there is no greater feeling than flipping through the stacks at ear X-tacy, finding that “gem” and enriching the collective music experience by knowing that you are contributing to something you love so much. We can start tonight. Louisville’s own The Watson Twins are playing an in-store show tonight at 5pm (I just got off the phone with ear x and the show is on despite the snow). Enjoy some great music and buy that album you’ve been thinking about all week. That is all for now. I’ll be at the press conference on Friday and I’ll let everyone know what I find out. Feel free to voice your opinions below. We need to show our support.
Via a press release:
ear X-tacy Owner Addresses Potential Changes
John Timmons, founder of the independent record store and owner for nearly 25 years, is expressing his concern for the survival of ear X-tacy, as we know it. Timmons will announce details of the store’s situation during a press conference Friday, February 12, at 10:00am, at the store,1534 Bardstown Road.
With the 10,000-square-foot prime location’s lease about to expire in March 2010, Timmons is focusing attention on the realities of a dire situation and the potential impact of losing one of the nation’s top 10 record stores. The absence of this local treasure would have a financial impact on the local media, especially public radio. It would affect concerts, promoters, and leave a void on Bardstown Road in the Highlands, an area already severely impacted by the economy’s downturn. The synergy of Louisville’s local businesses would be affected and the city’s music and cultural landscape definitely would be altered. The dynamics of “keep Louisville weird,” a local movement founded by John Timmons, would suffer from such a loss.
“This is not about business. It’s about something my customers have built and have come to expect. It’s about a place to experience music,” Timmons said. “Many tourists seem to make ear X-tacy a destination point as out-of-towners have learned about ear X-tacy through national exposure. I think the store is a place that makes Louisvillian’s proud. It’s been a community effort to build it and it’s going to take a community to sustain it.”
Those who attended last weekend’s Halfway to Forecastle festival know how thick the scene was on that night. Non-stop beats from every room, dancers in crowds and on stage, bright lights to compliment the dark rooms, and enough DJs to keep it going for hours. In the midst of the madness we managed to capture a few highlights from the show, specifically the fantastic LA Riots, for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy…
You’ve waited and waited and waited as the day drew closer. Well dust off those dancin’ shoes and Google Map this place you’re hearing be called ‘The Pointe’, because Halfway to Forecastle is finally here.
If you can’t get your DJ/electronic fix at this year’s H2F there must be something seriously wrong with you and you may want to see a doctor, as you’ve probably had a brain aneurysm in your sleep. Along with 3 stages worth of music, you can expect the other staples of the Forecastle festival, art and activism, to have a full-force presence as well.
For your artsy side, H2F promises live graffiti artists, ice sculptures, break dancing and light/laser shows by visual artist Benji Ramsey. We hope you love nautical fashion as well, cause there’s gonna be a nautical fashion show. That’s right, a NAUTICAL FASHION SHOW.
One of Forecastle’s cornerstones is the importance the festival places on activism on the local and global level. From the Forecastle website:
“An evening silent auction and raffle will be held for signed merchandise, signed poster from artist Jeff Gaither, a copy of DJ Hero, and a pair of VIP and after-party passes to the 2010 Forecastle Festival. All proceeds will benefit The Surfrider Foundation ~ an environmental non-profit dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the world’s beaches and oceans through conservation, activism, research, and education.”
And of course, the music. The entire evening will be comprised of DJs/electronic artists to ensure your aural pleasure. Here’s the line-up, and linked are our previews posted prior to the show:
H2F will take place in a venue most of us haven’t even heard of before, The Pointe (1205 E. Washington Street 40206). Get Google-mapped at the link provided. Here are the other details:
HALFWAY TO FORECASTLE

Show starts at 9:00 pm/18 + UPDATE: DAY OF SHOW PRICE – $20 at the door
Not only is the Backseat Sandbar crew known for music blogging, but to the surprise of many we are all also fantastic dancers. If on a certain night we decide to leave the Backseat estate and take our mad dancing skillz public we can always rely on Narwhal and A. Bell, also known as the OK Deejays, to be at a given venue for an entire evening.
In this writer’s month-long+ quest to see every DJ performance in our fair city, I can easily say that the OK Deejays put on one of the best mixes of anyone I have seen. We have seen them everywhere over the past month… Zanzabar, Seidenfaden’s, some beat-down warehouse on East Main street. You name a room with four walls, they’ve played there, looked at every face, and rocked them all. Your chance to get your face rocked comes tomorrow at Halfway to Forecastle. Come see the group bringing every venue down in Louisville, brought to you by Narwhal and A. Bell… OK Deejays.
There are not enough great things we can say about Amtrak. He won our hearts at last years Forecastle Festival with a set in the inappropriately unpopulated DJ tent, mostly because of his seamless transition from a house beat into Radiohead’s “Everything In It’s Right Place”. The amazingness didn’t stop there as he continued to play a daytime set that would have kept any lover of the night at a venue until it closed, just to see what Amtrak would do next. Best of all, you’ll have an opportunity to make up for missing him at Forecastle ’09 when he performs at this years Halfway to Forecastle, which appropriate is a night with nothing but, you guessed it, DJs and all who celebrate the art of the electronic. That’ll teach you to skip the DJ stage at Forecastle.
