I’ve been buying records at Ear X-tacy since I was a tadpole,” says Jim James of My Morning Jacket. He adds, “I think the thing that people forget about is the community and the memories that are created when you come to an independent and locally owned record store that you can only get in that town.”This quote is from the recording “Celebración de la Ciudad Natal,” a live album recorded in Louisville, at Ear x-tacy, and also the city’s Waterfront park by My Morning Jacket. The release was produced for Record Store Day 2009. In support of the save Ear X-tacy campaign, My Morning Jacket and ATO records is allowing all download sales for one month of this release to go directly to Ear x-tacy. The album will also feature a special price of $ 4.99. You can purchase the download exclusively via their digital home page at http://earxtacy.thinkindie.com, or directly here. The download is a hi-res 320 kb MP3 made available via ThinkIndie.com, which is owned and operated by CIMS(Coalition Of Independent Music stores), of which Ear X-tacy is a founding member.
I’ve been spinning this album non-stop recently. If you don’t already own it, now is the perfect time!!

The Courier Journal’s JL Puckett got the chance to sit down with the incredible Jim James to discuss his recent numerous projects including the Monsters of Folk, the Ben Sollee/Daniel Martin Moore album, his Harrison tribute…and of course his new Yim Yames moniker. It’s really a fantastic interview, and you can read it HERE
A few tidbits worth noting…the band is reconvening from their hiatus at the end of August to “to kind of jam and mess around with stuff” at James’ new studio in Louisville.
Louisville’s Jim James will be playing a show at the Louisville Palace on Halloween this year, but it wont be with MMJ or solo. He will be joined by M.Ward, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis who are collectively known as the Monsters of Folk (ala Kings of Comedy?). Tickets go on sale July 31st, but there is no price up yet. We’ll let you know when we find out. $1 dollar from every ticket sold will go to a local charity! Production Simple is putting this one on. MoF has a S/T album coming out September 22nd, so we all will have ample opportunity to check it out before the show.
UPDATE: Tickets will be $43 / $33. Tickets can be purchased at The Louisville Palace Box Office, Monday – Friday Noon – 5pm, or at

Judging by their constant tweeting throughout the day, Record Store Day seems to have been an unabashed success again this year. In New York, there were lines to get into the stores. In Louisville, people were piling in and out all day, with some wonderful performances.
You already knew that MMJ is releasing a double 10″ with songs from their Waterfront Concert and in-store ear x-tacy show to promote Record Store Day. Here are a few more details. The release will include seven tracks:
Evil Urges
Highly Suspicious
Gideon
Where To Begin
Librarian
Phone Went West
Dondante
It is availabe for pre-order at Aural Exploits for $18.45 + $4 shipping and handling. It will also include the CD (so you can take it in your car or import it to your iTunes). Not sure what the price will be at ear x-tacy, but it has to be better than that. If you are from out-of-town, then at least you have an option. Otherwise, I would come to the Listening Party on Friday night from 10-midnight or pick it up on Record Store Day on Saturday. Should be a good listen. Not sure if it will be worth $20 bucks.
One of the last true great rock bands, Ohio-based The Black Keys, are co-headlining Forecastle Festival this year. In the vein of The White Stripes in the way that these two carry off the Guitar+Drums only format, The Black Keys are meant to be a festival band. I call them one of the true great rock bands because they have a sound so absurdly big that it cannot be contained and they just seem so natural on stage. Black Keys recently opened for local hometown gods My Morning Jacket, and made for a perfect fit as they’re nearly just as face melting.
On their most recent performance in Louisville, the show sold out CityBlock (if I recall correctly), and they’re sure to sell just as many tickets for Forecastle. Could be best to buy tickets early, because at $40 for a single day passes & three day passes at $100 (available at Ticketmaster), they’re likely to go fast.
My Morning Jacket is showing Louisville lots of love here lately. As a public service announcement Record Store Day, MMJ is putting together a Live EP entitled Celebracion De La Ciudad Natal, recorded in Louisville which will ONLY be available in independent record stores such as ear X-tacy. The release is going to be released both on CD as well as a limited edition double 10″ vinyl starting on Record Store Appreciation Day (Apr. 18th). The tracks are going to consist of cuts taken from their ear X-tacy in-store as well as from the awe-inspiring Waterfront Park performance last August. Also, looks like Ron Jansin at MadPixel who created the gig art for the Louisville show has tweaked it for the live album.
Most of you readers will be in line at ear X-tacy, but for those non-Louisvillians, you can find the store closest to you here. For those of you attending Record Store Day at ear X-tacy, you’ll also get to catch a performance with Ben Sollee, who also recently recorded with Jim James.
In further celebration of the album and of Record Store day, MMJ created a video in appreciation….

My Morning Jacket’s Evil Urges ablum was nominated yesterday for “Best Alternative Music Album.” Also nominated in the category were the following:
Modern Guilt Beck
[DGC Records/XL Recordings/Interscope]
Narrow Stairs Death Cab For Cutie
[Atlantic]
The Odd Couple Gnarls Barkley
[Downtown/Atlantic]
In Rainbows Radiohead
[TBD Records] * Also nominated for “Album of the Year”
Past winners include The White Stripes (x3), Radiohead (x2), Gnarls Barkley, Wilco, Tom Waits, U.2., REM, Green Day, Beck, The Beastie Boys and Nirvana. Not a bad group to be included with.
“The beauty of people is anchored in imperfection; it is not that we are destructive but that we are ignorant to a better way. We dream big with even bigger costs. Furthermore, we learn the lesson daily that we don’t know what we have until it is gone. Combined, these two qualities are child-like but ever present.
When I look around I see a lot of things that are worth keeping: the mountain tops of Appalachia, family and community farms, art and music in schools, and, most of all, a government by the people and for the people. But how? The challenge that our leaders and us face is that we don’t know how to accomplish these goals. There are many eloquent ideas out there about renewable energy, educational systems, and governing, but realizing them means trying new things; which is daunting at least, and terrifying at most. As my generation takes the reins we should not sacrifice some qualities of this nation and the land in its boundaries to the wayfaring spirit of economy. They are important for Americans, our children, and the rest of the world.
These thoughts inspired these two new songs. But they are only songs…” – Ben Sollee

For anyone who thought that Jim James’ fall in Iowa last week wasn’t that serious, think again. Pitchfork has reported that MMJ has had to cancel their European tour. As most of you know, Jim was supposed to have played solo in Louisville last night, but his fall caused him to postpone or cancel all date leading up to the European tour. Since the Louisville show was to support the candidacy of Barack Obama, rescheduling until after the election wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense, so this one was canceled.
For those still itching to see Jim and crew, it looks like thte next date is the postponed Chicago shows which have been rescheduled for December 27th and 28th. Let’s just hope he’s all better for the biggest show of the year, when MMJ takes on MSG for New Years…
