The Hold Steady- Rock Problems

INFO FROM THE HOLD STEADY:

During our time as The Hold Steady, I’ve made a lot in interviews and onstage monologues about what little ambition we had when we started this band. We weren’t sure if we would play shows or release records. We had seriously managed expectations. But in the end, we did end up playing shows and releasing records, and we are better people for it. We’ve seen a lot of the world, met a ton of great people, and played a whole bunch of rock and roll music. Our efforts have been rewarded beyond our wildest dreams. It’s not exactly a mind-blowing statement when I say that this is the best job I’ve ever had. That said, there are sacrifices and discomfort that come with this territory: busted relationships, distance from family, physical exhaustion, disconnection from civilian life, ringing ears, interminable waiting around, trying to get through a ninety minute show when you have food poisoning, etc.

Our new record, Heaven is Whenever, is about struggle and reward. It’s about accepting suffering as a necessary part of a joyous life. It’s about how love can help us rise above these struggles. It’s about faith. It’s about how bad it hurts to settle for less. It’s about not being scared to try. It’s about four guys who still believe in the power and glory of rock and roll. Because even after a thousand soundchecks, a thousand load-in and load-outs, fifty missed birthdays, and a few hundred electrical shocks, our reward still vastly outweighs the struggle. In fact, the reward would not exist without the struggle. Thus, this struggle is inherently part of the reward. And in this way, the fantasy of playing rock and roll for a living is a lot like real life.

Heaven is Whenever is our fifth full length release. This is both cool and a cause to stop and think, as there are some inherent truths in any fifth record. For one, the band has to stay together long enough to last through the first four. Secondly, an audience has to be interested enough to encourage the band to make album number five. And third, the band still has to have something to say that it feels that it hasn’t said before.

I just went through my record collection to see how many bands I love never made it to a fifth record. I realized that most of the bands that mean the most to me had indeed made it through five and sometimes beyond: Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Thin Lizzy, REM, Creedence, etc. In some ways, album five implies a commitment and dedication and a realization that the band’s success is not a fluke, and that it’s not going anywhere. Albums like Physical Graffiti, Combat Rock, Fighting, Document, and Cosmo’s Factory are all fifth records that show their creators confident and brimming with new ideas. In many cases, peaking. While I am not going to compare our record to any of these masterpieces by my rock and roll deities, I am proud to unveil Heaven is Whenever and add it to our body of work. Five records in seven years. Not bad.

The title of this record comes from a lyric in the song “We Can Get Together”, which states “Heaven is whenever/We can get together.” In the end, that might say it best. The most amazing part of this life is the opportunity to share music with a supportive audience. It is not lost on us that people make sacrifices of their own to see us perform. They spend money on tickets and travel, they get baby sitters, they take time off work. It’s an honor for us to be a recipient of this kind of dedication. So when we say Heaven is Whenever, we mean that the greatest of rewards is our privilege of being able to tour and share our music and our lives with yours.

Thank you for being a part of this.

Chico Fellini vs. David Bowie (Covers Set) @ Cosmic Charlie’s (Lex) – 7/4

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Well this sounds pretty cool.

Sorry for the tiny picture, but that’s all I for this event on http://chicofellini.net/. Go dig around there and find me another. Have a few listens while you’re there too. Chico Fellini will be doing all Bowie covers over at Cosmic Charlie’s. Lexington is close enough to check this out. Maybe we’ll finally find out if there is life on Mars (LAME JOKE). It won’t take place on a drive-in Saturday (ANOTHER LAME JOKE), but it will be on Sunday the 4th (I’M OUT OF LAME BOWIE REFERENCES IN ALL CAPS). What a great way to celebrate a Sunday!

Thanks to Via You Ain’t No Picasso for the heads up!

REVIEW: Of Montreal @ Buster’s (Lex) – 5/27

Monday, May 31st, 2010

You all know about my love/hate relationship with Of Montreal, but it has to be more on the Love side of things because I went to Lexington to see them at Buster’s on Thursday night.  There were a lot of people there, but it was a relatively low key show and I liked that.  Maybe Lexington is better at handling their booze, but of Montreal got their whole attention and it made for one of the more enjoyable of Montreal’s shows I’ve seen of late.  They still didn’t play anything pre-Satanic Panic In The Attic, but I guess I’m going to have to give up on that.  Just as an exhibit though, here is their discography (I’ll cross off the albums that they don’t play from):

This doesn’t include EPs. OK, enough on that.

So why do I keep going to their shows?  It is because I’m in love with their new(er) albums as well.  Satanic Panic in the Attic is probably my second favorite of those listed above (with Cherry Peel taking the prize).  Additionally, you can’t say their shows lack energy and effort.  It is a great time, every time and any chance to see one of the most talented bands of the last 13 years is one you can’t pass up.

Maybe we can get them up here sometime soon.  Lexington has always been good to them and Matt Jordan of You Ain’t No Picasso (out of Lex) is one of their biggest fans, so I’m not holding my breath.  I’m just guessing, but they also might be spited from a mildly attended show at Headliner’s a few years back.

Here’s for hoping.

Appalachian Voices: Yim Yames, Ben Sollee, Daniel Martin Moore
Lexington Opera House

Lexington, KY

Tickets on Sale – 5/21/10 HERE

Via Crash Ave. & Sub Pop:

SEATTLE, WA – Kentuckians Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, singer-songwriter Daniel Martin Moore and genre-bending cellist and vocalist Ben Sollee will embark on a nine date “Appalachian Voices” tour in an effort to raise public awareness of the devastating practice of Mountaintop Removal coal mining throughout Appalachia. While Moore and Sollee completed a US tour in early 2010, the upcoming “Appalachian Voices” tour marks the first time the three will perform together since recording the 11-song album, Dear Companion, in 2009. A portion of the proceeds from Dear Companion as well as the upcoming tour benefit Appalachian Voices, for which the tour was named, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal coal mining together with diverse environmental problems impacting the central and southern Appalachian Mountains.

The people and the land of Appalachia are too important to us as a nation to be sacrificed for something as short-sighted as Mountaintop Removal (MTR) coal mining. Our cultural stake in the region, from its music to its log cabins, is an indispensable part of our history and identity as Americans. People all over the world know our country music, our dances and our stories and they call them American. They are the fruit of Appalachia. Learn more about MTR’s destructive impact, and how we’re all connected to it, at www.ILoveMountains.org.- Ben Sollee, Daniel Martin Moore and Yim Yames.

About Dear Companion:

Dear Companion was born when Sollee stumbled upon Moore’s music early in 2009. Both singer-songwriters were especially united in their concern about mountaintop removal coal mining (MTR), a form of coal mining that is devastating the land and culture of Central and Southern Appalachia. They set out to create a five-song EP that would raise awareness about the issue. When Yames, also an outspoken opponent of MTR, came aboard at Sollee’s invitation, he knew that the friends had something special, so he suggested they expand the project to a full album. Released on Sub Pop Records in February 2010, Dear Companion explores their ties to the home they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of Appalachia.

“…the album’s wild blaze of an introductory track that provides ignition for the inspired, stormy fold ahead. The remainder of the debut effort from the pair of Kentuckians burns slowly and evenly, boldly refusing to wane…This is one painfully beautiful record.” – Filter

“Dear Companion tugs on the heartstrings with understated force – a gentle indictment not only of corporate greed but also the apathy that enables it.” – Blurt

REVIEW: Wax Fang, Chico Fellini, The Pass @ Thunder – 4/17

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

If you are from Louisville, you know Wax Fang.  Soon, everyone will know them.  In full costume, they covered Prince’s Purple Rain in its entirety and proved more entertaining than the fireworks show itself.  But, let’s start from the start because it was a long day.

After waking up at 8am to wait in line at ear x-tacy for Record Store Day and a full day of vinyl hunting, I headed downtown to “Go Crazy at Thunder” at The Louisville Ballet Center.  I forgot to “dress to impress” and wore jeans, but oh well.  Louisville’s The Pass started playing as soon as I arrived and I was excited because I was told I would hear some new tracks from their upcoming debut LP release.  One of those tracks, “Criminal” is some of the best stuff I’ve heard them play and it just so happened that I got it all on video (check it out below).  Their EP has been getting a lot of buzz and our friends at Pretty Much Amazing called their song “Crosswalk Stereo” one of the best so far in 2010 (edging out The National’s “Bloodbuzz Ohio” by a couple spots).  You can download “Crosswalk Stereo” at the link above.  Needless to say we are big fans, and you should check’em out ASAP.

After a few beverages and a helping of the buffet for a base, I got to see Lexington’s Chico Fellini for the first time.  I wont go into it, but I had wanted to see them at the Pour Haus a while back and didn’t because of a sound problem.  Well, they were worth the wait.  They provided the crowd with a stylish blend of high intensity lounge rock.  It was dramatic and over-the-top, but not in a way that it lost its appeal.  A nice surprise and a great way to set up the fireworks show.

Fireworks.  You probably saw them.

Okay.  What happened next will be hard to put in words.  My focus was on Wax Fang’s staple theremin, front and center on stage, then the band walked out in full garb.  Wigs, frills, glam, gloves,  and fake mustache (wait I think that was real).  The highlights had to be “Take Me With U” (video below), “Computer Blue” (video below), “When Doves Cry” and, of course, a smashing finale with “Purple Rain.”  Everything was spot on and I don’t mean just the tunes and the vocals.  Scott Carney embodied Prince’s personality and flamboyance.  It was truly a spectacle.  You hear people talk around town about the talent of Wax Fang as musicians, but I don’t think I truly understood how good they were until Saturday.  So I liked the show, if you couldn’t guess.

[NOTE: IF YOU MISSED IT, THERE WILL BE AN ENCORE AT THE ZANZABAR NEXT WEEK TONIGHT (4/20)!!!  JUST $7.  DOORS AT 8.  MUSIC AT 9:30.   I'LL BE THERE FOR TAKE TWO!!!]

[UPDATE:  According to Facebook, "Wax Fang : Oh, snap! Prince lost his voice. Purple Rain at Z BAR to be rescheduled for sometime next week. Stay tuned. Spread the word."  Kinda reminds me of Wax Fang's free Nachbar show back in September that was canceled for the same reason.  I guess I can wait until next week, but I hope it isn't on Wednesday because Beach House is playing in Nashville.]

[UPDATE: The show will be on Tuesday, April 27, 2010.  See you there!]

Bigger than the show is the realization that Wax Fang will be the next big band to come out of Louisville and we will be happy to call them ours.  They recently signed with Absolutely Kosher Records out in California and in May they are going to re-release La La Land digitally, on CD and for the first time ON VINLY!!!  On top of that, they were hand selected to play Pavement’s All Tomorrow’s Parties in the UK (also in May).  I see them riding this wave right on to everyone’s iPod (and record player).  I can’t think of another band more deserving of the success.

More pics and video below the break….

Growing @ Al’s Bar (Lex) – 5/13

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

NYC’s Growing is coming to Al’s Bar in Lexington, Kentucky on May 13, 2010.

Via PUNKCAST:

Growing, originally from Olympia WA, but for some years based in Brooklyn, are living up to their name. Not only is their music evolving, from ambient soundscape to purposeful rhythms, but also since signing to The Social Registry in 2007. 2008 saw an outflow of recordings, including a new album ‘All The Way’. Lastly, well evident at this show to crown the year, is the most noticeable growth-spurt – the addition of a new member in the person of Sadie Laska, who we have seen before playing with Gang Gang’s Lizzi Bougatsos in I.U.D. A good crowd showed up to see the band headline at Santos and were rewarded with a healthy chunk of new material. I’ve picked a couple of the more upbeat pieces ‘Innit’ and ‘Party Nintendo’.

TOUR SCHEDULE:

MAN MAN Returns to KY! Cosmic Charlie’s in Lex on May 13th.

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

MAN MAN is developing a solid fan base across the country, but they must have  a crush on KY because they are coming back again.  Just of f the top of my head, they played Buster’s in Lex for Halloween 2009.  They played Forecastle Fest 2009 in Louisville.  The were at Headliner’s in Louisville in 2008 and at the Dame in Lexington in 2007.  For some reason, I feel that there was another Headliner’s show in there somewhere.  Regardless, you have had plenty of opportunities to see this amazing and/or insane band live and I hope you took advantage of it.  If not (or even if so), mark your calendar for May 13th (Thursday) for MAN MAN’s show at Cosmic Charlies in Lexington, Kentucky.  Tix are $12 (or $15 if you are under 21).  Show starts at 8pm.  No word on an opener yet.

Ani DiFranco

Only 5′ 2″ in height, Ani DiFranco has worked hard to prove that she’s big in stature.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Ani was singing and playing guitar long before most of us break out of the doldrums of Kidz Bop and Bubblegum Pop to finally realize what good music actually is. As she grew older, she began touring, developing both her signature style of performance and her extremely loyal fan base. Rather than waiting for some A&R bigwig with an even bigger agenda to sign her, Ani simply created her own label, Righteous Babe Records, which has released 20 of her own studio albums as well as 10 of her wildly popular Official Bootleg Series, allowing people to experience Ani live from the comfort of their own homes.

After over almost twenty years of hard work, Ani DiFranco’s career has blossomed into one that is successful in the rarest forms. Ani has proved that if you shed enough blood, sweat, and tears, you really can do what you want in your own way.

Erin McKeown

Erin McKeown has seen her share of successes over her decade long career that has seen her release records on a major label and tour the world with artists such as Andrew Bird and Ani DiFranco. Her latest record, Hundreds of Lions, was recently released on DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records.

YANP Presents Of Montreal @ Buster’s in Lexington – 5/27 (updated tour dates)

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

You may have read the rant I wrote about Of Montreal earlier this month after seeing their show in Nashville, but I tell you it is a love/hate relationship.  All that said, I still will probably be at the Buster’s show.  Buster’s is a great venue and will work well with the crowd that I anticipate this event will draw. The show is on May 27th (18+).  May 28th is still listed as TBD.  Wonder if that means they will make a stop in Louisville?!?!?!

Buster’s hinted about this show earlier today on their Facebook page, but it was too easy of a clue (everything, that is, except for the date of the show).

We’ll get ticket info up once it is available.

UPDATE:  Tickets are $25 and available HERE

Also, it appears our good friends at You Ain’t No Picasso are hosting the event!

REVIEW: of Montreal @ Cannery Ballroom (Nashville) – 2/6/10

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Let me start by saying that I’m a big fan of of Montreal.  I think they are amazing musicians and they have put out great record after great record.  I went down to Nashville to see them at the Cannery Ball room on February 6, 2010 and left happy, but unsatisfied.  Perhaps I missed the bus on this rant and it should have been made years ago, but I’ll write it anyway.

Full disclosure: my favorite album is Cherry Peel, but I listen to Satanic Panic in the Attic just as much.  This is a tribute to the band’s range.  Kevin Barnes and Co. have the ability to reinvent The Beatles and make a modern dance song at the same time.  It shows in their collective work of art.    That said, the level of their talent is lost on the majority of the audience because their show has become too gimmicky/weird.  Back in 2006, I saw them in Lexington complete with scantly clad characters being walked around on all fours with one of those Pulp Fiction balls in their mouth being whipped.  Their Bonnaroo 2009 show was more watered down, but still included pig-headed men and random animal/human amalgamations.

The Cannery Ballroom show took it to the next level.  Pigmen, check.  Nude guys, check.  Tigerman, check.  Gasmasks, check.  It felt like less of a musical performance and more like an exhibition in pushing the envelope.  Please don’t get me wrong,  I love high energy shows and I love a band going the extra mile for their fans.  That said, when the lead singer is pulled off a cross by men in tights with pig masks after the song prior to the encore, I am forced to question the band’s credibility.

I want to think that they don’t need a bazaar spectacle to gain a fan base.  Unfortunately, I may be wrong.  The crowd in Nashville included a large number of bedazzled Ke$ha’s (including guys) that where there for “the show.”  of Montreal might as well be playing “The Entrance of the Gladiators” at the Barnum & Bailey’s Circus.  In any other situation, I wouldn’t care, but having followed of Montreal for so long, I know they don’t need a “show” to be big.

Eat a bat’s head.  Remove a rib.  Break a guitar.  Smash a bottle on your face.  Bands have cooked up plenty of ideas to get people to shows, but at the end of the day, it’s talent that keeps them coming.  I only ask that of Montreal embrace their abilities and follow the path of the great bands before them.  Acts like Bowie and The Beatles had times of strange that were well received, but they always came back to their core; solidifying and expanding their base, while maintaining credibility.

of Montreal has a new album, False Priest, coming out this year.  It is probably too late for this one, but I only hope that they reach back soon and embrace some of their older stuff and create a tour that reflects the same.  Otherwise, the morning after, the make-up will be smeared and love will be lost on an experience that cannot last longer than a single show.

of Montreal- For Our Elegant Caste (the most “normal” song of the show)
