In an effort to prime the masses to the sound of unorthodox, guitar-less, noise/arena rock, Prizzy Prizzy Please have digitally re-released their debut album on Joyful Noise Recordings. The band’s epic new album “Chroma Cannon” will be released on April 20, and available as of March 9th, the self-titled debut “Prizzy Prizzy Please” is finally available for download via iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, etc.
Originally released in 2007 on Let’s Pretend Records, this album is loaded with shout-along party anthems and unbridled irreverence. Bloomington-bred, Chicago-based Prizzy Prizzy Please has managed to carve a musical niche with the power of zebra snack cakes, slam dunks, and piles of beer-soaked confetti – showcasing chainsaw-metallic keyboard lines, generously frosted with saxophone blasts running atop a ballistic drum and bass section. Though the upcoming LP “Chroma Cannon” is firmly planted in their “hanging out with Ravi Shankar phase”, the self-titled album encompasses a more playful tone, derived from countless PBR-soaked Bloomington house shows.
Here is your reminder that The Magnetic Fields will be performing this Friday, March 5 at 8:00 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre in Bloomington, Indiana. First off, The Magnetic Fields are incredible and have a new fantastic album out titled Realism (which you should definitely listen to). Secondly, the name of the theatre, Buskirk-Chumley, sounds cool. Third of all, Bloomington is a great town. This is a win-win-win situation, so don’t let this pass you by. Tickets are still available through the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre website.

Funny man Stephen Lynch is bringing his 3 Balloons Tour to the Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana. It is a one night run only, Friday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. Lynch, known for his songs that incorporate daily life and popular culture is also a Tony Award-nominated actor. Lynch has released two studio albums and two live albums along with a live DVD. He has appeared in two Comedy Central Presents specials and starred in the Broadway adaptation of The Wedding Singer.
I’ve been a big fan of Lynch for a while now and have never had the chance to see him perform live. If you haven’t heard his stuff, check out the videos below. What I’m always amazed at is the fact that he is a talented singer and musician on one hand and is equally capable as a comedian. I’ve seen it attempted a lot, but he does it the best.
Tickets are on sale now (see below).
Must be 21 years or older to attend.
WE HAVE THREE PAIRS OF TICKETS TO GIVEAWAY TO THIS SHOW. COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR BEST (OR WORST) KNOCK-KNOCK JOKE. I’LL PICK THREE AND EMAIL THE WINNERS ON MARCH 23RD.
The Flaming Lips are coming to Bloomington, Indiana on April 22, 2010. Tix are a little steep, but hell, it is THE FLAMING LIPS!!!!! So now we are on Fiery Furnaces overload. We’ve posted pics and video from their show last summer at Fountain Square in Cincy, from their two shows in Chicago for New Year’s eve, and now we have some more Fiery Furnaces goodness from their January 21st show at the Southgate House and January 22nd show at Radio Radio in Indy. Needless to say, we are HUGE fans and will probably be at every show they have within a few hours drive. They’ve been going strong for the last decade and show no signs of stopping. If you aren’t familiar with this band, at least check them out. But beware, you may get hooked and become an addict like us.
A full album stream of Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore’s record, Dear Companion, can be found on the band’s website all this week leading up to their February 16th release date!
Dear Companion is a collaboration between three Kentucky musicians: the songs are written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia.
A portion of the proceeds from Dear Companion will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal and finding a better way forward. Learn more at: www.ilovemountains.org or www.subpop.com
Before Bonnaroo, before Pitchfork, before SXSW, and before just about every other festival, will be the Pit Stop Music Marathon in wonderful Bloomington, IN! Philly’s Dr. Dog loves Louisville. They return for a fourth time in as many years. We saw them back in late 2007 at Phoenix Hill Tavern and were not that impressed. Then the band totally redeemed themselves at the 2008 Forecastle Fest. They played at Headliner’s in April of 2009 and now have another show at Headliner’s scheduled for May 7th with Deertick.
Tickets are $15 bucks and you can get them now HERE.

UPDATE: In what has been described by pundits as a “landslide victory of the ages,” The Pass stunned Mr. Pitera and his fans. The people have spoke. Mr. Pitera has yet to issue a concession statement, but did sing the “Whole New World” song at the concert, possibly representing his new outlook on life as 2010 continues to be “a magic carpet ride.”
Tonight (1/20) you have two options. One involves YouTube sensation, Nick Pitera, the guy who did that Aladdin song and sang all the parts (and was pretty good at it, see below). The other involves a rapidly rising dance rock band from here in Louisville, The Pass. Let the debate begin…
Nick Pitera
When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20
Where: Paul W. Ogle Cultural & Community Center at Indiana University Southeast, 4201 Grant Line Road, New Albany.
Tickets: $18.50. Call Ticketmaster at (502) 361-3100, or go online at www.ticketmaster.com.
Ok, now for the opponent…The Pass.
Like I said, The Pass is from right here in Louisville and have quickly made a name for themselves. They recently signed with SonaBLAST! Records and their debut album is in the works with help from the same producer behind Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club, Harlem Shakes and The Walkmen. Their EP, Colors, should be available soon. They are playing tonight at the Z Bar (Preston St.) for FREE. Here is their response to Mr. Pitera youtube presence:
The Pass
When: 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20
Where: Zanzabar (a/k/a Z Bar), 2100 South Preston Street.
Tickets: FREE. Call Ticketmaster and tell them you don’t need a ticket for this show.
We report. You decide. Since we are in the no spin zone, I cannot tell you that I will, in fact, be at Zanzabar tonight at 10pm.
Bear in Heaven is a Brooklyn-based rock band formed by Jon Philpot. The sound of the band incorporates influences from psychedelic music, electronic music, and krautrock.
Jon Philpot has previously released music as part of the duo Presocratics, in collaboration with guitarist and composer Need Thomas Windham. Presocratics released two albums on the record label Table of the Elements in 2001; both were produced by Philpot.
The first Bear in Heaven release (Tunes Nextdoor to Songs, Eastern Developments 2003) was an EP of solo recordings by Philpot, with guest musicians performing on various instruments. Shortly after the release of Tunes Nextdoor to Songs, Philpot joined with guitarist Adam Wills, keyboardist/guitarist Sadek Bazarra (a graphic designer with Brooklyn design collective GH avisualagency), guitarist David Daniell (of San Agustin), and bassist James Elliott (Ateleia, School of Seven Bells). Eventually drummer Joe Stickney (drummer with Paul Duncan, Rhys Chatham’s Essentialist project, and current touring drummer with Panthers) was added to the lineup. Daniell left Bear in Heaven in 2005 to focus on his solo project. In 2006 they did a Take-Away Show video session shot by Vincent Moon.
Red Bloom of the Boom, Bear in Heaven’s first full-length album with the full band, was released in 2007 by the Hometapes record label.
Elliott left the band after the completion of the recordings of Red Bloom of the Boom to focus on School of Seven Bells and his solo project, Ateleia. Bear in Heaven now performs as a four-piece with Philpot on vocals, guitar and keyboards; Wills on guitar and bass; Bazarra on bass and keyboards; and Stickney on drums.
Their most recent album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, received the “Best New Music” award from Pitchfork Media, with the reviewer stating: “Beast Rest Forth Mouth is as familiar-feeling as it is difficult to pinpoint. Mostly made up of textural, spacious three- to four-minute pop anthems with towering choruses, BRFM is a welcome reminder that an album doesn’t have to be bombastic to feel huge and important. Take out the earbuds and let it fill a space: This is music that’s bigger than your iPod—music you’ll want to feel all around you. Though not quite coming out of nowhere, BRFM seems like a surprise gift—a striking consolidation of the spiky psych-prog tendencies of their debut into a pop framework.”
Bro. Stephen (a/k/a Scott Kirkpatrick), Louisville’s Brooks Ritter and Bloomington, Indiana’s husband&wife, are joining forces for a show at Quills (Baxter Ave.) on December 11, 2009. If you are looking for a relaxing start to your Friday night with a warm cup of coffee and some amazing sounds, this is the place to be. We’ll be there.
Bro. Stephen is a project of Scott Kirkpatrick who is also the force behind indie-rock band Chemic. Originally conceived as a songwriting exercise, Bro. Stephen has come to mean much more. Pulling from a childhood of being a preacher’s son, a deep collection of poor decisions, and a constant struggle with Narcolepsy, the songs of Bro. Stephen are a casual dart game: the sound of ennui.
Despite it’s relatively recent inception, Bro. Stephen headed out on the road in 2009 on a national tour playing songs off of his upcoming debut record and armed with hand-made copies of The Front Room EP which was a collection of demos Kirkpatrick had recorded on a cassette tape machine. Along the way Bro. Stephen has supported acts like The Fiery Furnaces, Sun Kil Moon, Anni Rossi, DM Stith, The Daredevil Christopher Wright, and Vandaveer, and almost finished the recording of its debut album Baptist Girls, a record that was largely recorded on an old farm in Northern Indiana (available sometime in 2010 on some record label maybe).
Bro. Stephen will also be releasing an EP in conjunction with The Laminar Excursion Monthly in 2010 (which we already told you about here).

The artistry of Brooks Ritter is a seamless garment. An indivisible blend of voice, musicianship and songwriting that is capable of communicating the wide range of human emotion and illuminating our hopeful, fallen, love-sick, grasping condition. His lyrics are insightful and honest, his music displays the rare kind of versatility that makes you think and makes you move, and his voice is an instrument capable of subtle nuance and supple power that glides effortlessly through the realms of rock, folk and soul.
Neon Indian has put out one of my favorite albums of the year (Psychic Chasms), so I was psyched (no pun intended) to see them live. I was a little apprehensive about the show given the technical nature of their album with heavy electronic/synth infusion. Little to my surprise, Alan Palomo and Co. were still working out the kinks at their show at The Bishop in Bloomington, Indiana. First off, their set was delayed a half hour due to “technical difficulties.” Once the show started, the transitions were choppy and Palomo’s vocals were clear as day. This normally wouldn’t be a bad thing, but his vocals were supposed to be distorted. Raw and exposed, the first few songs lost their luster. The silver lining to their show was their final song (before the encore), Ephemeral Artery. Everything came together for a glimpse of how great Neon Indian can be live. It made the whole trip worth it.
