REVIEW: OSSO w/ DM Stith @ 21c – 11/2 (sin Sufjan)

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Last night at 21c, Osso (a quartet from Brooklyn, NY) played their new album “Run, Rabbit, Run” which is an arrangement by a handful of New York composers of Sufjan Stevens‘ 2001 instrumental album “Enjoy Your Rabbit” for a classical string quartet.  21c was packed with all the seats filled and a handful of people left standing in the back of the room.  DM Stith opened and was the highlight of the evening.  He is signed to Sufjan’s label, Asthmatic Kitty, and hints of Sufjan himself.  The Osso quartet accompanied his set to everyone’s enjoyment.  Sufjan’s film “The BQE” followed the Osso Quartet’s performance, but there was no intro from Sufjan.  I’m pretty bummed about it, but it is what it is.  Word on the street is that he was sick, but it put a downer on an evening that was overall pretty cool.  As far as The BQE goes, I can appreciate it for what he was trying, but it got old pretty quick.  I’m no film major, but parts of the film seemed to exist only to fill time.  I would have preferred he spent the last year and a half making a real album.

On a different note, if you are interested in how the adaptation of “Enjoy Your Rabbit” compares to the original, check out the two tracks below…

Louisville’s International Festival of Film

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Louisville will have their very own film festival this week! Ahem, make that Festival of Film. There will be different events throughout the weekend, starting this Thursday. Seminars, film screenings, after parties, you name it. Be sure to stop by to check out the action. Schedules and more info are available @ http://www.louisvillefilmfestival.org/

From the LIFF site:

Louisville’s International Festival of Film (LIFF) is committed to screening artistic films not usually presented through commercial venues, giving independent filmmakers a place to showcase their work. The proceeds of the Festival will be used by the LFAI to help fund education efforts focused on training the filmmakers of tomorrow in Metro Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

In addition to film screenings, the festival will host a variety of seminars, events and parties designed to provide Kentuckians and industry visitors alike the opportunity to become involved in the future of the Film Industry in Kentucky. We believe that an annual festival will promote Kentucky and Metro Louisville as a destination point for film production drenched in hospitality, arts and culture.

“Dub Echoes” is a documentary that traces the origins of the Jamaican dub music and it’s influence on the development of hip hop and electronic music. Key names, from both reggae and the electronic music world, talk about the birth of this genre, how it helped to change the way we perceive music and how it’s presence can still be felt today. Just follow the bass lines. Filmed, produced & directed by

This American Life – Live comes to Louisville

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

This American Life – Live comes to Louisville. Public Radio International show, This American Life, has created a special live show that will be shown for one night only to a limited number of movie theaters around the country. We are fortunate enough to have it come to two Louisville area movie theaters.

Ira Glass hosts a live version of the popular radio show with guests such as Dan Savage, Starlee Kine, and Mike Birbiglia. There are also a few short films and animated shorts in the show, as well as a special appearance by Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. I hear his part is quite a good surprise, but I was not given any spoilers.

Stonybrook Cinema De Lux 20 and Tinseltown will be having the special showing this Thursday at 8:00. Advance tickets are available for $20. Might I add, this should be well worth the price of admission. The only dilemma I have is which theater I will go to.

Tickets (Stonybrook)

Tickets (Tinseltown)

Vanguard Theatre Presents…Girls Rock!/The Machine Girl

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Louisville's Vanguard Theatre!!

I have been incredibly excited about the Vanguard Theatre since the owners first discussed the concept with me back in June and the first wave of promotional fliers began popping up. Since that time I’ve been telling everyone I know, but never managed to get word of it up on Backseat Sandbar. After a successful trial run at Forecastle, the Vanguard Theatre is giving something of a trial run to the public at large tonight with the double feature presentation of Girls Rock! and Kataude mashin gâru (The Machine Girl) which hold a 73% and a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively.

The concept of Vanguard is simple…independent, artistic and foreign films in a unique movie-going environment. In large part, they intend to be a step beyond what Baxter used to be, and unlike anything we’ve had in Louisville for years. Additionally, and unlike any of the cinemas in town, you (can) get double features, wood-oven fired pizza, a full bar, outside seating, full service inside theaters & as they describe it, tons of awesomeness. The only thing keeping the guys from getting everything started is, unfortunately, money, and so, to help ensure some kind of cash flow, they’ve devised membership programs ranging from $10 to $10,000 with various privileges afforded. You can become a member on their website, or simply by clicking the link below. I for one intend to sign up for the $50 package for contribution as much as anything. The concept is great, I know the execution will be great…they just need our support. So have an easy night tonight while resting up for tomorrow’s show…

And, if that isn’t enough, Scott Carney of Louisville band Wax Fang will be playing, along with the Trophy Wives (not Big Time Band as noted on the flier).  The schedule goes 7:00: “doors” 8:15: Trophy Wives 9:00: Girls Rock! 10:15: Scott Carney 11:00: The Machine Girl

From IMDB:

Girls Rock!: Girls Rock! follows the journey of four 8-18-year-olds as they are transformed by the liberating powers of music at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls. Given the opportunity to bash the drums, wail like a banshee and take up space, the girls jettison gender stereotypes like old hats on their way to a joyous final concert that will change their lives forever.

Girls Rock! Trailer

The Machine Girl: Ami is a typical college girl. She’s bright, friendly, popular and athletic, with nothing to set her apart from other girls her age other than the fact that she is an orphan, left to care for her younger brother after her father committed suicide after being falsely accused of murder. But while there is tragedy in their past, the siblings’ future looks good, except for one thing. Ami’s brother has racked up a considerable debt to another boy at school, and that boy just happens to be the heir to a clan of vicious ninja-yakuza. Ami’s brother can’t pay, violence breaks out and in the course of trying to avenge her brother, Ami is captured by the clan. They torture her and hack her arm right off. Ami escapes, barely alive, and is taken in by the owners of a machine shop who build her a customized, bullet-spewing arm. From that point, the quest for revenge is on in earnest.

The Brothers Quay @ 21c

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Jesus Christ. Somebody needed to prepare me for that.

Tonight was the 6 shorts by the Brothers Quay. While I’d consider myself an oddball, I’m far from being confident to talk film noir. I’ve made a few miscellaneous videos available…they’re realtively indicative….except that you NEED to see Streets of Crocodiles, which I’ve posted for your viewing. I could always pick very basic themes out, but truthfully they were a bit hard to follow.  They do present a surprising amount of realism in spite of the puppetry though.

Kino Louisville Fall Cabaret – Oct. 19 & 21st

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

(if the image above is difficult to read, try here

What the hell is a Kabaret and do you know how to spell?
two good questions you may be asking:

This event challenges filmmakers to produce a 5-minute-or-less film based on a “secret ingredient”, (usually a single-word theme). The final screening will feature all films made within a 48-hour period. Any and all may attend this final screening to enjoy the adventures of those kamikazes who pushed the limits of their filmic horizons.

It’s not a contest, just good ‘ol plain fun (read: delirious excitement).

The Important Dates:

Directors’ Meeting: Friday, Oct. 19th. 7:00 – 8:00 pm. The Pink Door, 2222 Dundee Rd. in the Douglass Loop off Bardstown Rd. We’ll be meeting in the Party Room. Kino films from around the world will be screened, rules are explained, secret ingredient revealed, filmmakers then register to make a film in 48-hours. Participants will then create films, incorporating the secret ingredient, returning them in mini-DV tape or DVD format by 6:45 pm on Sunday. There is no admission fee to attend the first night. Filmmakers pay a registration fee of $5. So, ye who are curious, come see what this is all about, and get yr questions answered, then you can form a team, join one or go solo.

Final Screening: Sunday, Oct. 21st. 7:00 –9:00 pm. The Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center, 1860 Mellwood Avenue. Screening of films made within the last 48-hours. Admission is $5 to the general public. Registered filmmakers pay no fee on Sunday night. Depending on the weather the screenings will be either in the courtyard or the lobby. A WARNING to parents and the easily offended: these films are not pre-screened, so we cannot control what you may see, except that we do ask filmmakers, upon submitting, to declare whether their films are rated “R”, then those films are shown during the second half of the screening.

For more information, visit the website (www.kinolouisville.com), there is a Forum therein for networking and such. Also, the Louisville Film Society is on board to facilitate the playback of films to be shown on Sunday night!
