Thursday, August 12th, 2010

When I heard that Herbie Hancock was coming to Louisville, you can’t understand how excited I was.  I’ve secretly been putting together a massive collection of Herbie Hancock records.  He is just one bad ass musician that has been going strong through six decades.  In 2008, he won two Grammy’s, including Album of the Freakin’ Year!  The man is a legend and I can’t wait to see him live.  It will be an unreal experience.  Details below:

Dear Companion is a collaboration between three Kentucky musicians: the songs are written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia.

Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore @ The Brown Theatre – 2/26

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Touring in support of their upcoming release Dear Companion, Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore will be performing at The Brown Theatre on Friday, February 26 at 8:30 p.m. This show was originally scheduled at The Bomhard Theater, but had to be moved due to demand for tickets. This means that even more people can come out and see a great show. I got the chance to see Ben and Daniel last year at Kentucky Center and it was one of my favourite shows of 2009, so this one is not to be missed. Tickets are on sale now for $25 and are available at The Kentucky Center box office, www.kentuckycenter.org or by phone (502) 584-7777, (800) 775-7777 or TTY (502) 562-0730. If you already had tickets for the Bomhard Theater show, the box office will call to re-seat you in The Brown Theatre. Don’t forget to check out Sollee and Moore’s new album Dear Companion, it hits shelves Feb. 16 on Sub Pop.

Rodrigo y Gabriela @ Brown Theatre – 3/7

Friday, January 8th, 2010

http://audioabsinthe.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/3.jpg

I’ve been a huge fan of Rodrigo y Gabriela for a while now, but to truly experience this duo, you have to see them live.  I had watched youtube videos of their live stuff and it is enough to peak your interest, but you need to be there in person.  I finally got a chance to see them at Bonnaroo last summer and was blown away.  It’s hard to explain, but they sit nonchalant on stage then break into one of their songs and all you see is a blur of hand strumming, picking and banging on the side of their guitar.  They make it look so easy, but it is far from it.  Luckily, they have decided to make Louisville’s Brown Theatre a stop on their 2010 tour.  The show is on Sunday March 7th.  Tickets go on sale January 15th.  They will run $35 bucks, so start saving, but it will be worth it!

Rodrigo y Gabriela – Tamacun

From the KCA:

Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, January 15, at 10 a.m.

Description: Mexican guitarists Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero rose to prominence playing a passionate blend of acoustic music fueled by the smoldering fire of flamenco and bossa nova, plus heavy metal pyrotechnics.

Honing their live performance skills by busking their way across Europe, the duo is now a favorite at festivals worldwide, and continues to diversify their instrumental repertoire in a variety of styles.

Their most recent release 11:11 features 11 songs dedicated to 11 different musical influences – from Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix to the jazz-fusion band Shakti.

Joan Baez @ Brown Theatre – 3/10

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Only a few months after Dylan, folk legend Joan Baez will be gracing the stage at Louisville’s W.L. Lyons Brown Theatre on March 10th. Perhaps best known for her close friendship to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez was an integral part of the political folk landscape of the 60s and now in 2008, Ms. Baez has been sharing her soul with us for 50 years. Ever a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable—marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King, inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic, singing on the first Amnesty International tour and just this year, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London’s Hyde Park. This tour is in part promotion of “Day After Tomorrow”, her first release in five years, and part public service announcement to raise awareness for many public and social issues. As each of her previous albums have done, “Day After Tomorrow” acts as a barometer of the times, bundled with political speech.

The show starts at 7:30pm & ticket prices run $50 / $35 / $28. Tickets are available through Kentucky Center and are on sale immediately.

ONCE's The Swell Season @ The Brown – 5/12

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

The Swell Season who starred in the critically acclaimed film “Once” are coming to Louisville’s Brown Theatre on May 12.  You knew they were good, but you may not have known that both the guy (Glen Hansard) and the girl (Marketa Irglova) were a real band together.

Talented as they are, tickets are a little ridiculous for otherwise not-so-known musicians at $30-$40.  Nevertheless, they proved themselves talented, and if you’re so inclined, tickets go on sale Feb. 29 at 10am & you can get them at KCA. (thanks Joe)

Opener for Feist: Jason Collett

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

So maybe other people have known about this for a while, but to my knowledge, this is the first I’ve heard about who is opening for Feist.  His name is Jason Collett….

Here’s what Brooklyn Vegan has to say about him:

Jason Collett

ARTS & CRAFTS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM BY JASON COLLETT | FEBRUARY 5, 2008 (2007-11-05)

Arts & Crafts is set to release the third collection of new songs by Jason Collett. The new album, titled Here’s To Being Here, will be released throughout North America on February 5, 2008.

Here’s To Being Here captures the essence of Jason’s live performances and features the energy and musicianship of his touring band, Paso Mino. “This is very much a guitar record, in the sense of it being very tasteful…that’s the greatest accomplishment of this record” says Collett, “recording in bigger spaces and live off the floor was the ideal I wanted to shoot for with this record. Recording this way allowed for spontaneous creations, which led to many wonderful little accidents.”

Here’s To Being Here was recorded and produced in Collett’s hometown of Toronto, ON, by musician/producer Howie Beck. The album also features guest performances by fellow Broken Social Scene member and Apostle of Hustle front man Andrew Whiteman, as well as Tony Scherr (Norah Jones, John Scofield), Liam O’Neil (The Stills) to name a few.

Jason will be touring North America throughout November, supporting label-mate, Feist, as well as part of select Bluebird North dates. A special series of shows titled “Jason Collett’s Basement Revue” has recently been announced for Dec 4, 11 and 18 at Toronto’s The Dakota Tavern. Jason will perform songs from Here’s To Being Here, as well as many favourites from his previous releases (Idols of Exile, 2005 and Motor Motel Love Songs, 2003) with the help of special surprise guests who will be featured throughout the series.

The show is going to be amazing. I’ve been bragging to everyone about it, because I’m in the pit. Having found out about the opening band now, I’m excited for the show in toto.

Anyway, as if you don’t know…the show is Tuesday November 20th at Louisville, KY W.L. Lyons Brown Theatre.  Thanks to Production Simple for making this happen.
