MP3: The Uncommon Houseflies – “Supermarket Sushi”

BIO:

The Uncommon Houseflies began somewhat by accident when Louisville, Ky., music writer and amateur bass player Kevin Gibson asked his guitar-playing son Scott to help him record a song as a Christmas gift. The song never became a hit and no offers were forthcoming.

It’s true, however, that Kevin raised Scott on heavy doses of the Ramones, the Beatles, Weezer, etc., and early in Scott’s childhood it was common for the two to play air guitar together when no one was looking. It was, in a way, the birth of the Uncommon Houseflies.

“It was a special time,” a wistful Kevin said.

“I have almost no memory of it,” said Scott. “I was only four.”

The duo later added drummer Kevin Hays (the Rumors) and became a band that plays accessible power-pop — sporting punk, indie rock and even alt-country influences — with humorous, off-the-wall lyrics in the vein of Tenacious D.

The Houseflies broke through in 2007 when their dark-comedy romp “Disgruntled Shooter (in the Nursing Home)“ was played on the nationally-syndicated Dr. Demento Show, and they haven’t let up, finding their way onto streaming online radio and even iTunes.

Several new songs have become staples of the band’s always-unpredictable live show (for instance, the band served 30 pounds of crispy bacon to fans at a recent gig). From the over-the-top rocker “Supermarket Sushi” to the country-fried “Idiots in Love” to the laugh-out-loud ballad “Cotton Candy in the Rain,” and even select cover songs like “Love Stinks” and “Camel Walk,” the Houseflies always aim to have fun. And it’s often at someone else’s expense. (It’s no wonder people say they sound like the Ramones beating up a clown.)

The band’s new album, Excrement Weather, is coming July 10, 2010; breaths are being held. But until the bomb drops, you might want to consider trimming those toenails. Because, that’s disgusting.

To catch The Uncommon Houseflies, you can check out their CD release on July 10 at Slugger Field, 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, here are two of their tracks…
