I’ll never understand this festival. You get two big (good) bands like Flaming Lips and Spoon…but then you throw in shit like Cap’n Jazz and Widespread (really, we need to see them two years in a row?). You couldn’t pay me to see this shit.

Flaming Lips and Spoon???? Worth the ticket price alone. Truckers – take or leave. Saw Ted Leo at Headliners before, solid show. Seen Lucero too many times to get excited about a Forecastle appearance, always fun though. Panic again? Zzzzzzz…Sara Watkins – well, since I’ll be there anyway…Muzza Pazza were a blast a couple Forecastle’s ago. The rest I’ve either not heard of or am indifferent to.

Think “Cap’n Jazz” made the cut because of the nautical name? I agree with James on that one…As for hating jam bands, while I’m not into them anymore myself, they sell tickets, which is a solid business move on JK’s part. Just as long as it doesn’t become a jam-band only event…

  4. Rick Rock says:

Widespread Panic again? Do not get it…The Lips and Spoon are nice but this fest needs to branch out get some different acts. JK really knows how to organize a good festival and the space they have on the Waterfront is beautiful. But it’s kind of a shame that the lineup has been less than stellar for several years now.

  5. Sara says:

With Spoon, Flaming Lips, and Ted Leo…this fest could have competed with Pitchfork fest and Big Ears…instead they messed it up with all the other trash. 60 bucks to see three bands? No thanks.

I for one think JK’s wisely and increasingly made each year better. Sure, if he had had a massive bankroll of investors back in 2002 like Bonaroo did it’s first year out, he could have made it amazing from the start. But he’s grown the thing from a quaint neighborhood day-fest into a world class attraction for our city. And he’s done it all by incessant hard work and an unmatched passion that drives him. I’ve been to every Forecastle except 2006 at Mellwood, and I have to say, each year steps it up a notch at a healthy pace. I think last year’s might have been the first time a profit was actually made. While I don’t understand the Panic booking again, having Spoon and Flaming Lips on the bill tops last year’s Black Crowes, Black Keys and Avett Brothers headliners in my opinion. Also, this fest has always been quite diverse: indie rock, jam bands, electronic, DJs, hip-hop, R&B, singer-songwriter, bluegrass/old-timey, marching bands…Bear in mind this is just the initial list. The other stages have yet to be announced, and there could yet be more big name acts.

Did you not see on the Forecastle website, “More headliners and over (60) artists to be announced in April. Stay tuned!”

Chill out. This is great intial announcement. Here’s to hoping they add MMJ.

  8. ChrisT says:

Passion Pit and MMJ would make the line-up epic…

I agree that Widespread Panic is a waste, especially after having enduring TWO nights of them last year. For some reason though, they’re an incredibly popular band in certain circles, so you can’t blame them for booking a band that will be a draw. Jam bands are any festival’s bread and butter to a certain extent, their fans support live music in a big way, so you can’t fault them for that.

  10. Dan K says:

Stop hating on Widespread Panic. FYI, They draw more fans that every band on the lineup put together. I do think MMJ should play this festival. I mean cmon, it’s in their back yard.

  11. mt says:

does anyone know what day flaming lips play?

  12. Tim Donahue says:

Widespread Panic = mad fans who travel. You can’t blame JK for booking them again since he can count on people showing up. I would imagine this will be the last year WSP plays anyways. Their show will probably be Sunday night too so you indie scenesters won’t even have to come that night if you don’t want to. Instead you can stay home and gently wash your pair of tight, heavily-worn jeans or you can go to Nachbar and hang out.

  13. Denisha Leiker says:

That’s some inspirational material. Ne’er knew that beliefs could possibly be this varied. I liked reading it and will add it to my bookmarks.
