How was your Friday night? Hold up, let me interrupt you and tell you about mine. My Friday night was absolutely amazing. Why, you ask? Let me go in depth about it. Pull up a chair and listen to my tale about that time Roman Candle and The Ravenna Colt played a small intimate venue called Zanzabar before they hit the big time. That’s right, BOTH of these great bands on the same stage. If you don’t believe me then look at the videos and pictures I took to prove that this Friday night actually happened, all right here in Louisville. Everyone was there, even Murmur was sitting and dancing right smack in front of the place to get a great view of what went down that night.
When I arrived Roman Candle was already in the middle of their second song, and as soon as I heard them I was very sorry that I was late to the show. Almost immediately the lead vocals and guitarist Skip Matheny reminded me of why I love going to shows so much. He was jumping around, telling stories, energetic and happy to be there, throwing harmonicas, playing guitar with the mic stand, etc. He was doing all of these things all while keeping a robust sound flowing through the speakers. It was more than just live music, it really was a show. Skip really looked like he was enjoying being there, telling us jokes that referenced everywhere from Amy Grant to Toby Keith merchandise that they had for sale. I’m disappointed that when I purchased their vinyl of Oh Tall Tree In The Ear (which I highly recommend) I did not get the limited edition Toby Keith Ford F150 with the flames on the sides, mufflers as big as Skip himself, and the RMN CNDL license plate. When I see them again, and I most certainly will be seeing them again, maybe they will give me one.
And finally, Johnny Quaid returns. After six long years Kentucky sees Johnny Quaid come back in style with a hometown show by The Ravenna Colt. It was well worth the wait. Johnny and the boys arrived on stage amidst the ambient sounds and opened up the night with Loner In Disguise off their debut album Slight Spell. As soon as they started into it you could just tell what kind of night it was going to be. They weren’t playing a show just because it was scheduled on their tour, they were playing because that’s what they wanted and needed to do. Johnny touched on the ambient sounds playing in the background throughout their set by letting us know that he doesn’t care for silence, and by all means Johnny should not keep silent on the music scene any longer. Even after the last song on the setlist was played, Johnny couldn’t stop. He broke out the acoustic and gave us a great rendition of the final album track That Day At Point Reyes. Even early into the night as he was wrapping up South Of Ohio you could see in his eyes just what it meant to be playing at home for his friends, family, and fans. Welcome back, Johnny.
