The Seedy Seeds
We welcome the Seedy Seeds back to Lexington on our big stage. They last joined us as part of the Beaux Arts Fall Ball Halloween party, during which they rocked us out in the front room. For a trio, Mike, Margaret and Brian pack a whole lot of sound into their set, bringing in accordion, banjo, bass, cello, clapping, computer generated synth, guitar, kazoo, penclicks, slide whistle, toy keyboard, drum beats, and a whole lot more (if you can believe that)!
The Rainjunkies are an original four piece band based in Lexington, Kentucky whose music mixes acoustic and electric textures into a unique sound that ranges from organic backwoods whispers to full-throated indie rock. The manager of one well known club compared them to The Pretenders with a hint of twang. If the roots of the band’s sound are firmly planted in rock and all manner of Americana, the trunk is the songs themselves, powerfully literate and evocative. The Rainjunkies accompanied Alexa Woodward in a well-attended front room show a couple months ago. We are excited to have them back on the big stage, where their range of talent can really shine.

Welcome, Strangers
Welcome, Strangers includes one of Buster’s own tech gurus, Ben Distler! When you ask Ben what Welcome, Strangers is all about, this is what he has to say: One day, thousands of years ago, someone invented music. Welcome, Strangers is merely the logical eventuality of the sum of those last few thousand years. Pretty deep stuff.

Beautiful Bells makes an encore appearance in Lexington, this time to promote his new release, Precipatory. It’s been described as a “flowing array of dark and crisp kick-snare beats with a healthy undercurrent of churning samples and raw synth lines.”
Reviewed as “…cool, distant, and very smart.”, “ensemble creation at its most disciplined.” and “an anomaly…”, his production skills cut a cross-section through his diverse interests yielding one of the most versatile producers around.
“Amtrak (Caleb Cornett) first started making music in 2001 playing bass and keyboards for various indie-rock bands, sounds ranging from Sigur Ros to CAN. With bands falling apart left and right, Caleb started to notice he was gonna have to do his own thing. Having a keen ear, he began arranging his own music. Being heavily influenced by Ninja-Tune and Warp, he set out making experimental break-beat music. In the past years, his skills in editing have grown tremendously. Always trying to keep things fresh, his genre tends to go all over the place, from Kraut-Rock/Fusion to HipHop/House. In 2006 Amtrak started playing out here and there, getting a feel for the live performance. Amtrak has had the opportunity of gracing the stage with Designer Drugs, Figure, Ooah (GlitchMob), Kid Color, Flosstradamus, Elliot Lipp, Jesse Jamz, OkDeeJays, FutureKill and many more. “In Transit” and “Dirty Dancing” are out now on iTunes and digitally everywhere worldwide!” – Bio

Word from Karate Body is that they are sold out, but I’ve seen a couple of copies floating around. I know Underground Sound had one for $17 yesterday. Really good stuff and THE pitchfork agrees… (oh, and that Owl City guy likes it too.)
If you missed The Seedy Seeds playing for free at Zanzabar (Z Bar for you hip people) on Wednesday then you better have a good excuse. Feel free to comment your good excuses for missing shows below. Though, if you did end up missing them, here are the videos that I took just for you. Share them amongst friends, neighbors, relatives, enemies, strangers, extra terrestrials, extra extra terrestrials, puppies, and everyone else in between. Enjoy, here are The Seedy Seeds:
Will.i.am will be bringing his spinning skillz to Buster’s with a 90 minute DJ set that will be kicked off by the region’s best talent. This will be a party you will not want to miss.
Hello, Nick here.
I’m very happy to announce my very first photo show! This show will contain photographs I’ve taken on tour with Young Widows since the recording of our last record, Old Wounds. We’ve played close to two hundred shows in the last two years and have been all over Europe, Canada, and United States.
Along with the photographs I will have screen printed posters that will be hand numbered and signed. All pieces will be priced to sell.
I hope to see you there!

Thomas A. Minor & The Picket Line will be at The Green Building for some Appalachian Love on February 6th (for KFTC). I’ve seen The Picket Line back Bonnie Billy at Funtown and at the Old Tarr Distillery and I’ve seen Cheyenne Mize with Bonnie Billy in Bloomington, with Ben Sollee at the NuLu Fest and with Arnett Hollow. While they are amazing in their other projects, there is something very special about this group. I caught them at the Z Bar not too long back where they were playing some of their new songs and they were fantastic.
Here is what I wrote earlier about their new CD:
The seven song collection is fantastic from start to finish. As soon as the disc started playing, they grabbed me with “Ain’t No Doubt About It” which may be my favorite song on the album. After a long day at work, I was relaxed immediately. You can listen to it below and if it doesn’t wet your whistle, I don’t know what will. Perhaps it is being from Kentucky, but there is something to be said about the effect of warm, drawl-filled vocals floating over the sounds of a soft violin and mandolin, the heavy pic of a banjo and the steady strumming of a bass. Songs like “The River Rose” and “Magnolia” soften the concrete and brick around you take you someplace else (perhaps Funtown). The album is short and sweet leaving you asking for more… or you can just play it over and over again like I have all weekend. They say they are not good enough to be a bluegrass band, but that couldn’t be far enough from the truth. They definitely have the gift of making beautiful music.
The band is…
Thomas A. Minor-Guitfiddle and Vocals
Drumstick-Guitfiddle and Vocals
The String Mizer-Fiddle and Vocals
Pig Iron-Mandolin and Yelling,
Pork Chop-Outta-tune Banjo
Danny- Bassfiddle
or Oscar Lee Riley, Jonathan Kempf, Bradley Reinstedler, Danny Kiley, Bob Dixon and Cheyenne Mize.
Ravenna Colt, the new project by Johnny Quaid, debut solo album “Slight Spell” on vinyl is available for pre-order from Karate body on Feb 2 and start hitting doorsteps on Feb 12 (not bad considering the street date is February 16th!). Pre-order begins at midnight the morning of Feb. 2nd. Cd and physical are being released on Removador Records, the label jointly owned by Johnny Quaidand Jim James.
As we mentioned before, Johnny Quaid was one of the founding members of My Morning Jacket, but left in 2004 to try his hand at carpentry. The title seems appropriate enough, as he’s been a little off the radar for a slight spell. Nevertheless, after getting back into Kevin Ratterman’s studio, he’s back. Fortunately for us, he will be performing a record release party on February 19th at Zanzabar (9pm) with Roman Candle (tickets at door only).
Of course, as it’s a Karate Body release, that means we’re getting it in vinyl, but iPod enthusiasts need not worry as each copy comes with a download card for a digital copy of the entire album. The album will be available in stores and online on February 16th. The cd and digital copies are being released by Removador.
