REVIEW: Jim James @ The Rud (Motherlodge) – 10/1/09

Local legend, Jim James, made a rare solo appearance in Louisville, Kentucky on October 1, 2009 at The Rudyard Kipling as part of the three day Motherlodge Festival.  I cannot convey how amazing it was.  The Rud was packed from wall to wall with people standing on chairs that lined the room.  While a few folks would occasionally verbal tweet their thoughts (“This is fucking amazing,” “Oh my God, Jim James is right there,” “Jim, Jim, Jim, Jim…”), the vibe was overall solid.  Jim (or Yim) played throughout his catalog with a few from the new Monsters of Folk album, including one of my favorites, “Magic Marker.”  He also provided a few songs from Z, At Dawn and Evil Urges.  I knew I was in for a treat, but had no idea how great it turned out to be.  I have never seen Jim solo, and I missed out on my last chance after our Obama benefit fell through (stage injury in Iowa).  The wait was worth it.  While he may be in the Monsters of Folk with other great artists, James has no equal.  We just happen to be lucky enough to have him call Louisville home.
