The Seedy Seeds WOXY2

As a few of you know, I have a few musical projects that take up a lot of my time, and one of them is the indie-folk band Bro. Stephen which just finished up a month-long tour and which will keep me out of Louisville for quite some time.  Now, you will have to excuse the shameful self-promotion because this really isn’t about me.  This is about all of the bands that I’ve met and will meet along the way and who you should check out and support in hopes that we can lure a few of these acts to play in Louisville in the near future.

Just last weekend I caught up with one of the most exciting bands in the country: Cincinnati’s The Seedy Seeds.  TSS closed up the opening night of the Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnati, OH at Cincinnati’s famed Contemporary Arts Center.  I have had the pleasure to catch this band quite a few times in the past 6 months since they’ve played Skull Alley a few times (to a lucky few folks) and even played the Buzzgrinder Birthday Bash at The Rud with J Roddy Walston and The Business (which was one of the most fun shows in Louisville I’ve ever been too).  That’s not to mention the times I’ve caught them in their native Cincinnati where they are indie-pop royalty with the support of their city like Louisville hasn’t seen since The Merediths (remember them?).  Their set at MPMF had over 200 people crammed into a hot, sweaty room totally blissing out on every note and beat that came from the stage.

If you are not one of the lucky folks who have seen The Seedy Seeds, then let me be the one to fill you in.  If you have any love for fun pop music that’ll get you dancing in public like you do you in your room, then The Seedy Seeds might just be your new favorite band…and they should be.  The Seedy Seeds started out as a project where Margaret and Mike decided to pick up some instruments they were not familiar with and create a dance band out of it (the accordion and the banjo, respectively).  This resulted in their first record Change States which is a pitch-perfect pop record that is so fun that you’ll forget all about your crappy job/our crappy economy and you will find yourself singing about Margaret’s cat with “The Little Patton” or you might just have a ridiculously sweaty dance party with your friends and rock out to “Earned Average Dance America”.

Luckily for us, TSS did not stop there and released a follow-up record this year entitled Count The Days.  Their new record added a bit of emotional complexity and even stronger songs and also, even more importantly it added Mr. Brian to the mix with his drums and light show and wound up being somehow even better than their first record.  I would compare them to another band, but who do you compare an accordion-banjo-dance-pop-band to?  This is a new breed of tunes like you’ve never heard and TSS accomplish the impossible in the MySpace years and sound totally fresh.  Without an ounce of pretension and the biggest hearts ever to grace The Queen City, The Seedy Seeds are ready to take over the world and will be doing just that this fall as they tour (including a stop at Skull Alley) with The Young Republic and even play the Halloween Bash show at Busters with Man Man (I hear we have Sean Cannon to thank for this)!!!!  I think I may need to repeat this…

The Seedy Seeds and Man Man will be playing the Halloween show at Buster’s in Lexington this year!
