It is out on May. The compilation also includes, Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Decemberists, LCD Soundsystem, Sharon Jones and Gnarls Barlkey. See full track list below…
Anyone remember The Ataris? I think it was circa 2003 when they hit the mainstream with their “Boys of Summer” cover, but those of us cool punk kids were into their “earlier stuff”. Seriously though, they put out some great pop-punk records back in the day on Kung Fu Records with the most popular being Blue Skies, Broken Hearts…Next 12 Exits. From what I hear, I don’t think the line-up on this poster is correct. I have been told that Frontier(s) are actually not playing, but someone will be in their place. It’s just too bad MxPx isn’t playing too, right!?
Handsome Furs, DRI Dri & The Cinnamon Band are coming to Louisville’s Skull Alley on July 16th!! Handsome Furs released a new album (on SubPop) back in March and it is ridiculously good. They are now out on a hefty tour, currently in Europe, then back to the States at the end of May. This show will be toward the end of their trek, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Check out a few of the tracks below. Tickets go on sale tomorrow and will be $10 bucks. Get excited!

From their Myspace page:
Handsome Furs are not a message band and they are not political, but Handsome Furs are a message band and they are political. The juxtaposition of cold, metronomic, electronic beats, courtesy of Alexei Perry, with the jagged, dissonant and frail, broken or breaking, guitars of Dan Boeckner portray what it is to be a human being at the bottom of the 21st century. It underlines the confusion you feel as your best friends are conveyed to you via a series of ones and zeros passing through lines and cables and microwaves; the same confusion felt witnessing the pure, wholesome thrill of a band of musicians pouring their hearts out on stage, through someone’s cell phone as pixelated streaming video; the profound and bitter frustration of your long-distance relationship with the world up against a burning, alcohol-soaked sunrise as you admit some things you never thought you would; your constant feelings of inadequacy intertwined with the omnipotence modern technology grants us all. You are there, yet somehow you never are. As we all are and are not. You are left with a rhythmic and empowering programmed beat interrupted by the warm, reverberating fuzz tone of vibrating strings on wood hit hard enough to shatter skyscrapers. Over it all a perfectly imperfect voice roars images of landscapes, maps of forgotten continents ripe with history, and you are left feeling as human and alive and wide-eyed as you should be every single morning.
These are not concept albums, but there are concepts: Plague Park was Scandinavia as the couple experienced and envisioned it, jagged and pure landscapes, the melancholy yet hopeful air of April skies shining over frozen tundra, massive pine forests and an always looming Lutheran work ethic. It was slower; evoking images of a glacier creeping over mountains, moulding valleys and fjords, at the same determined and hardworking pace at which the region became populated and that population formed its stories. FACE CONTROL has a similar geographic appeal, moving on to Eastern Europe for inspiration, echoing through empty skies and frozen plains. We pan over a horizon and see a world rife with signs of human life; bridges, barns, moats, railroad tracks, and towering buildings. And another human element is introduced to the mix, slowly creeping over, steadfastly materializing: politics. Not in the “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” sense; this is not an aggressive activism or even calm call to arms. We rather face an examination of our current lives and values, and how our collective pasts reflect.
“I don’t know but I’ve been told, every little thing has been bought and sold.”
As part of the Derby festivities, 4th Street Live is bringing OAR to Louisville to play there for FREE. You can’t beat that, but I bet the traffic will be nuts. While you are down at 4th Street, look out for Paris Hilton, who will be there for some promotion at that new sports bar. Maybe that is where the $850,000 our tax dollars went (CityBlock is pissed). Anyway, if you are into OAR and not spending money on concerts and like 4th Street, this is for you.
Billed as one of the best live bands on the planet, O.A.R., headlines the largest Derby Eve party in town! O.A.R. got their start on the campus of Ohio State with major influences from groups like Dave Matthews Band. They quickly rocketed into the spotlight as a major band, eventually selling out New York City’s Madison Square Garden. O.A.R. is currently on tour with their ninth album, “All Sides” and continues to thrill fans with their unique style of grass-roots pop. Their biggest hits include “Love and Memories”, “This Town”, and “Shattered (Turn The Car Around)”, which took the #1 position on the Adult Alternative chart and the #2 slot on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks. They also performed the theme song for the ABC Show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and their song “Love Is Worth The Fall” is featured on the “Twilight Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Special Edition”. The FREE concert by O.A.R., with opening band Parachute, begins at 8:00 PM on Friday, May 1 and is presented by Anheuser-Busch.
FREE PARKING is conveniently located at the Fourth Street Live!/PARC garage nights and weekends. The garage is adjacent to Fourth Street Live! on Fifth Street between Muhammad Ali and Liberty. Valet parking is also available at the corner of Fourth Street and Muhammad Ali. Additional parking is offered at the Seelbach Garage, Hyatt Garage, and Starks Garage.
The rumors that started two weeks ago became reality over the weekend, and no one knows what’s going to happen to the important downtown block that has housed the CityBlock entertainment complex. A hundred employees lost their jobs.
Club owners Ward Plauche and Don Blackburn announced over the weekend that they weren’t re-opening the club that closed last Wednesday. Plauche has been critical of city government in recent months, and especially its support of nightclubs at Fourth Street Live. Cordish’s new Sports and Social Club, supported by nearly a million dollars in the form of a forgivable loan from the city, opened last week.
We were not able to go to the Of Montreal show in Cincy at the Madison Theatre on April 23rd, but Matt at You Ain’t No Picasso was in attendance and grabbed some great pics and wrote a review. He and my brother are in the running for world’s biggest Of Montreal fan, so you know it is good. Read it HERE.
