Thanks to Matt Jordan of You Ain’t No Picasso for turning us on to an upcoming show by indie kid favorites Of Montreal. It’s been far too long since Kevin & crew have been through and I’ve been one of the unfortunate few who hasn’t gotten the chance to see them, so I’m really looking forward to this show…

Music & Fashion go hand-in-hand, which is why I feel it’s within our realm to talk about the later. While I’ve never been a fan of reality television, I’m proud to say that one of our own, Celia Ammerman, will be competing on Cycle 12 of America’s Next Top Model, premiering Feb. 25th on the CW at 8pm. Considering many of you are from Lexington, many of you are likely to know Celia, the Cynthiana girl participating in virtually every fashion show at UK during her time there. She’s been turning heads in New York, appearing in The Sartorialist in February sporting a Thom Browne suit, and now hitting the runway soon.
For those who don’t watch the show, here’s the blurb on the show:
Created by world-renowned supermodel Tyra Banks, who executive produces the series with Ken Mok, America’s Next Top Model chronicles the transformation of everyday young women into potentially fierce supermodels. Fourteen participants will live together and vie for the incredible grand prize: an opportunity to be managed by Elite Model Management, a fashion spread in Seventeen
ANOTHER SHOW BITES THE SNOW AFTER THIS CRAZY STORM. NO WORD YET IF IT WILL BE RESCHEDULED. FROM WHAT I HEAR, MOST PEOPLE WON’T EVEN SEE THIS POST SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WITHOUT POWER. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE GETTING THROUGH THIS.
UPDATE: This show is BACK ON!
Update 2: Nevermind.
The folks over at Bellarmine University have a special performance lined up for January 30th with the internationally acclaimed musician Ben Lee! Ben is a brilliant songrwriter from Australia who has spent some time collaborating with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller in The Bens, acting in indie movies (The Rage in Placid Lake), fronting the great indie-punk band Noise Addict (Ecstatic Peace/Grand Royal Records), and putting out his own records since he was 16. It is rare to find Lee playing solo shows in the states and this tour to tout his new album The Rebirth of Venus has only 3 stops in the US, with the other two being in Los Angeles. Ben will be playing a special set by himself and this will be a show that you definitely will not want to miss.
Also at the show will be a special performance by the Louisville band Chemic. Chemic is taking time out of recording a follow up record to their debut album Fever On The Forest Floor (Crossroads of America Records). The past year or so has seen them sharing the stage with Sun Kil Moon, The Six Parts Seven, Mason Proper, Grampall Jookabox, and PWRFL Power, and they have been featured on CDs with Louisville stalwarts like My Morning Jacket, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Wax Fang, and Dave Pajo. This particular show will be a special appearance for them as they will have some special guests and will be playing a host of new material from their upcoming record.
Tickets for this show are available at Louisville’s Ear X-tacy early this week for $10 and will also be available at Bellarmine University for $5 if you are a student.
The Disco Biscuits played at Forecastle last summer and will return to Louisville’s Headliner’s on January 28, 2009 (thanks to Production Simple). The Disco Biscuits are a progressive kind of trance jam band with electro layers that have been going strong since the mid-90s. Their live show can go on for seemingly years, blending free-form jazz improvisations and rave-like rhythm. The fans completely lose themselves in the music surrounding them. While they are not for everyone, I’m sure they have gathered enough fan support in Louisville to make this a pretty good time. Future Rock will open.
Tix are $18 in advance ($20 at the door) and are available at Ear X-tacy.
Just shy of one year since Backseat Sandbar celebrated it’s first full year of existence with musical performances by The Instruction, The Zero Element, Skyscraper Stereo & Azns n Bnzs, the first two in that lineup played again together for the second time to a full house at Derby City Espresso. First up for the night were The Instruction, who we’ve long been fans of. Recently, they’ve been spending some time putting together a full length album, and the practice sessions and time they’ve spent together was noticeable in the music. The Instruction were surprisingly tight from the word go, but on Friday night they were far and away the tightest, most complete they’ve been. Every single member has gotten so much stronger and the crowd all knew it. Classics like Hello Darlin’ and May Day still ruled the day, but some songs I didn’t recognize kept myself and many others throughout the crowd moving.
Next up came The Zero Element with their instrumental dance rock. I hadn’t had the chance to catch Rahman & crew since the show a year ago, and was needing a fix of some good dance rock, which is, for me, the single most fun type of music there is. Again, as I presume the case is with many young bands spending a little more time together, everyone seemed so much more comfortable playing together, and the sound came off significantly fuller, making it hard not to dance.
There is nothing better when a couple of your favorite musicians come together on a project. The man seemingly collaborating with everybody these days is hometown mastermind Ben Sollee, who is at it again, this time with Nashville-based Computer vs. Banjo. We gave you an introduction to CvB back in June, and have stayed fans in a big way ever since. This remix doesn’t do too much magic to the song, which was good as is, but does reinvent it just enough to keep it new. You can download the track HERE, or stream it below.

Peter Bjorn And John are coming back to the area just over a year after their previous trip through, this time to play at The Historic Southgate House on Friday, April 24 with Brooklynites Chairlift to open the show. We caught PB&J at Headliners back in Nov.’07 and they put on a really fantastic performance with 10x the energy that you would have expected, from Peter climbing the light towers to dueling guitars, it truly made for a great show. We’re glad to see Peter Morén spending his time with the full band rather than on his solo career. The band will be out promoting Living Thing, which will be released by Almost Gold Recordings and StarTime International on March 31. You can download “Lay It Down” from Peter Bjorn And John’s website. We’re streaming “Nothing to Worry About” below, originally brought to the public exclusively via the ever-informative blog of Kanye West.
Supporting PB&J is no laughing matter either, Chairlift will be opening the night. Chairlift is the latest artist to go from nobody to someone everyone knows with the click of the TV remote for the recent iTunes ad blasting “Bruises”, but iPods aside, Chairlift put out a really strong album worth listening and her name on the bill with PB&J should make for a fun night.

DCFC are coming back to Louisville on April 4th as part of a massive US tour. I’ve gotten to see Death Cab 2 or 3 times, and I’ve loved it everytime. The first time I caught DCFC was in Louisville with the incredibly talented Ted Leo/Pharmacists. This time, they’re bringing along the Cold War Kids and one of our favorites, Ra Ra Riot. I look forward to catching a lot of Narrow Stairs live because just as they claimed it to be unlike anything they’ve done before, I’ve not been as able to let it grow on me.
As an incentive to get more people on the line as members of the DCFC Union Local #1138, members can get their hands on presale tickets HERE on Wednesday, January 28 at 3pm with tickets going on sale to the general public on 1/30 (usually 10am). What’s more…In addition to gaining first access to tickets before the general public, there will be a random seat upgrade for some lucky fan club members for the starred shows below, including Louisville.

Nashville’s Lambchop came to Louisville on Thursday night and absolutely blew away The 930. Frontman, Kurt Wagner, stayed seated the whole show, but moved the crowd with his deep, rhaspy filled with pauses and drops. He draws constant comparison to Kris Kristofferson, but I would throw Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits (two of my very favorites) on the list. This is a man you want to have a beer with, or at least know someone who had a beer with him. Minus a few corny jokes from his bandmates, the performance was truly moving. I knew the show was great when they walked off the stage, but this was one of those shows that I have thought about every day since. Whether it was sitting and listening to a record or driving to work, I would pause and think, “Damn that show was amazing.”
Sapat opened and showed why we love them so much here and gain a new fan in Kurt Wagner, who carried on about how much he loved their set. The stage wasn’t even big enough to handle the whole group as some members had to sit off stage with their instrument. At points their set seemed like a throwback to Slint, which I can’t complain about. While much different than the Terrastock set, it still knocked the wind out of my lungs.
We didn’t get to go to this sold out show at The Palace on January 20th, but here are a few reactions from some friends who went:
They quit serving beer way too early T
The lights were by far the most intense and colorful than ever for a KOL show…like the Secret Machines who opened for them a few years ago at the Ryman in Nashville.
They varied from the album versions of songs a bit, something for which they have been criticized in the past for not doing at live shows, so that was good.
The best song was an extended version of Knocked Up.
The Followills seemed to have toned their style down a bit too which was refreshing…for a while they were a little too rockstar with the black leather and all. Caleb just rocked a zip up hoody and jeans.
So there you go. Wish we could have been there, but you can’t catch’em all. Thanks to Leeland Kessler for the photos.
Canadian electronic-post-punk experimentalists DD/MM/YYYY, known for swapping instruments mid-set, and being able to play seamlessly alongside just about any band at any time are coming to Louisville’s Skull Alley on March 13th as part of an incredibly exhaustive tour in support of their newest LP, Black Square, to be released on March 17th.
Press Release:
Scheduled for digital release on February 17th, street release on March 17th through We Are Busy BodiesDeleted Art shortly thereafter, (Canada) and European Release through Black Square is the by-product of van-confined wanderlust, inevitable maturity & a growing comfort level in the studio environment. They do not deviate too far from their origin, but there’s an inherent seriousness that may have evaded previous releases. They are inclined to explore, are open to all concepts, and are stubborn only with regards to a ‘no-style’ approach to making music. Notable inspiration comes to us from the works of Frank Zappa, Melt Banana, DADA art and video games. Anticipate an urgent set of elastic songs – dramatic & tempered by healthy doses of irreverence that make it hard to stand still.
