Last Call Film Festival @ Rudyard Kipling – 6/5-7

Friday, May 30th, 2008

The Last Call Film Festival is going to be June 5-7 at the Rudyard Kipling with an admission of $5 for the last two nights, which. The Last Call Film Festival was voted to be the Best Louisville Film Festival in 2006.  Looking through the lineup of films to be shown, it looks like it’s going to be an awesome time.  Perhaps the raddest thing though is that Kevin Murphy is going to be there.  Also, Lucky Pineapple is going to be performing to close out

VHS or BETA Takes 5 for Louisville

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

No series on Louisville musicians would be complete without dance rockers VHS or Beta.  In a city where punk dominated for years and years and solid indie rock abounds today, VHS or Beta is the cornerstone that makes the diversification complete.  Despite growing up and playing punk rock early on, their first Album, Le Funk, was very much a disco punk album with dance-floor ready tracks like Disco Paradise and Solid Gold.  From there the band began to better utilize Craig’s Robert Smith-like voice and began shifting toward rock music, first with the critically acclaimed Night on Fire, and culminating with 2007′s post-Zeke Bring on the Comets.  One of the greatest things about this band is that you can see them at the Nachbar one night and on a nationwide tour or television the next.  Also, they’re the reason my New york friends believe there might actually be a legitimate hipster scene in Kentucky.

Bassist Mark Palgy took a few minutes to answer a few questions….

1. What neighborhood did you grow up in?

Mostly St. Matthews and the Highlands…I spent a brief amount of time in Hikes Point, but after attending Highland Middle School I stayed in the highlands where I met the music crowd.

2. When did you start playing together? Did you have a different band name?

We started in January of 1997. I don’t think we could agree on a name for a short time. Vhs or Beta was something we all liked — which was rare back then.

3. First show you played in Kentucky (plus any details you remember about it)?

We played in the basement of the house we practiced/lived in. It was Thunder Over Louisville and the house was downtown so there was some foot traffic around. Most of our friends showed up…we were really nervous.

4. First show outside of Kentucky…how did you book it?

I think it was Cincinnati at Sudsy Malone’s. We used to just book them ourselves.

5. Favorite Kentucky band (other than yours)?

DUH! My Morning Jacket!!!!!!

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin @ Mad Hatter – 7/21

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is coming to the Mad Hatter on Monday, July 21st supporting their recently released Perishing. After coming out of the gates with wide praise in the blogging world for their 2006 Broom, the band seemed to play it a little safe, and failed to make quite as memorable and coveted of an album as the first. That said, SSLYBY remains an incredibly talented group of musicians whose live shows are rumored to be a thing you don’t want to miss…

CANCELED: Bowerbirds & Bon Iver @ 930 Listening Room – 8/5

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Bowerbirds and Bon Iver are coming to Louisville’s 930 Listening Room on August 5th.  Bon Iver missed his show with Black Mountain earlier this year when the snow blew in causing a state of emergency to be declared in Kentucky.  Bowerbirds are having their 2007 Hymns for a Dark Horse (which received an 8.4 from Pitchfork) re-released on their new label, Dead Oceans.  Bon Iver has likewise had incredible success with this year’s For Emma, Forever Ago (which received an 8.1 from Pitchfork).  The intimacy of the 930 should be a perfect environment for these two acts with their folk influences and sounds.  Each of them are hauting and introspective, but never anything but beautiful.  Bon Iver owes us one, so it’s nice to see him bring along such a great act to accompany the performance.

No word on ticket prices, but we’ll be sure to update once we hear….

UPDATE: OK guys, Bon Iver had gotten picked up by the Wilco tour and abandoned us again.  Something is telling me we’re never going to get to see him. I hope he proves us wrong! My understanding is that the show is totally canceled, so Bowerbirds won’t be making an appearance either.

Cake @ Caesers Casino – 6/4

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Cake is coming to Caesars Indiana on June 4th along with Jessica Lea Mayfield.  Cake, to me, is an incredibly interesting band because people are either altogether indifferent about Cake, or massively obsessed.  From my perspective, they never seemed to warrant much fantaticism, and in the beginning I thought it was just a one-off thing.  Since then, friends of mine into some of the most indie dance rock music can’t help but come back time and time again to Cake like an old, worn pair of jeans.  Whatever the reason, it’s hard to deny their catchy tunes and radio and tv-friendliness.  The band has two albums forthcoming, the first of which is Live at the Crystal Palace, and the second being a studio album that may or may not make it out in time for the New Year.  It’s worth noting that Jessica Lea Mayfield isn’t so bad herself, recently appearing on the new Black Keys album Attack and Release. Part country, part indie rock, part folk, part soul…she should put on a great show…

Tickets for the show are $30 & are on sale now at Ticketmaster and the Roman Casuals at Caesar’s Palace. The show starts at 8.Again, Louisville kids have a decision to make because Ingrid Michaelson is playing that same night at Headliners.

George Clinton, Los Lobos, JJ Grey & Mofro @ Waterfront Park – 7/4

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (8:30pm), Los Lobos, JJ Grey & Mofro are going to be playing Waterfront Park on Friday, July 4th as part of the two-day Waterfront Independence Festival. If there could be a better way to celebrate the holiday, I don’t know what it could be.   George Clinton played an important part of my high school and college dance floor days, for better or worse, though I’ll never be able to groove like the 67 year young man singing the songs.  Combine that with Los Lobos and Mofro, and July 4th may well be the funkiest 4th I’ll ever have.

Unfortunately, it looks like you’ve got a choice to make though, because on that same night we’ve got another artist who takes most of us back to our youth with Weird Al Yankovic at Iroquois Ampitheatre.  Tought decisions in Louisville for the holiday, but I’ll most likely be making my way to the waterfront…

George Clinton – Atomic Dog
JJ Grey & Mofro – Florida
Los Lobos – Evangeline

THANKS: Backseat Sandbar's The Incident at the Pour Haus

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Friday night was the one year anniversary of Backseat Sandbar’s first post & to celebrate the occasion the Pour Haus was host to The Instruction, The Zero Element, Skyscraper Stereo & Azns n Bnzs, all of whom just shredded the night & made it a party to remember (save for the effect of the PBR). Throwing our first party, we had no idea what to expect, but I feel that I can come away with it feeling that (1) it was an awesome and successful night, and (2) we have a lot to learn about throwing parties.

With that in mind, we’d like to take a moment out to THANK everyone who came to the show, friends, fans and readers of our blog, fans and friends of the bands, loyal patrons to the Pour Haus, and kids generally in the music scene, and both of our girlfriends for putting up with the the time we invest into this blog. However, none of the night would have been possible without the help of so many people. First, we’ve got to thank Ace, Robin, Clint & Dominic at The Pour Haus….they made the show as easy to organize as to show up for, from the free admission, to guarding the door, to the discounted drinks which we bought by the 30 pack. We’d like to thank each of the bands for bringing their friends, for playing an incredible show and making that party so damn successful in terms of attendance and fun. Essentially, the point of Backseat Sandbar is to promote the music that we’d want to see live and hear, and thanks to each of these bands, this party was exactly the type of party we’d want to go see…exemplifying the very point of why we’re doing this. We’d like to particularly thank Wes, Rahman, Jawon, and Chris, whom we’ve befriended over the last year, for convincing their respective band mates to do this party for free. Lastly, we’d like to give special thanks to Chris & Andrew of Azns n Bnzs who played a sick set, and caused me to end up with cake all over my face and in my hair and up my nose. Thanks for the cake guys….that was awesome…

If you missed the show, I think you’re likely to get a chance to see each of these bands again soon. Several people in attendance were the people you find putting on shows and promoting around town, and more than one time I had someone come up to me to ask about helping to arrange another show with this band or that. Perhaps the best thing about the night was the cross-section of music that resulted in a lot of people hearing bands they might not otherwise have seen. Countless of you asked about finding out more about these bands or getting their album. I couldn’t tell you how many demo CDs I could have sold on the behalf of each of these bands..and when I say that I mean every single artist we had playing…I had several people from unrelated groups of friends ask me about each individual band and where they could see them next (of course, read the blog was the only real answer). I was elated to find the members of each band so strongly digging the sound of every other band playing….standing in the audience and talking about arranging future shows together. We accidentally reunited old high school friends, we talked to a cat sporting the Zach Morris cell phone, we each bought 45 beers at a bar (haven’t done that before), but most of all, we had a great time.

Again, the turnout was great and the party was massively fun, but I’m sure we can go bigger and get more of Louisville out, so expect to see more events like this popping up now and then….

Weird Weeds @ 6th & Oak – 6/13

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

New Asthmatic Kitty signees, Austin’s Weird Weeds are coming to Louisville on June 14th for a House Party, but a slightly more “proper” show on Friday, June 13th at 6th & Oak, with Shedding and Softcheque. According to Gorilla vs. Bear, Weird Weeds have made “one of the year’s strangest and most beautiful albums” with Weird Feelings, and they’ve drawn references to Wire & the Minutemen, but with a psychadelic pop edge. I spoke with Nicholas Hennies, who said the house party will be small, but that most anyone can come.
