Hallelujah the Hills @ The Dame (3/18) & The Rudyard Kipling (3/19)

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Boston’s Hallelujah the Hills are coming to Louisville & Lexington to support their 2007 release, Collective Psychosis Begone.  What’s more, they’re giving away mp3s here of a live performance of Collective Psychosis Begone from this past January.  The group is constantly compared to Neutral Milk Hotel, which may be the best compliment I have ever heard.  It may be in large part to heavy reliance upon a cello, a trumpet, and a melodica, but nevertheless it’s an incredible compliment.

The Lexington show is at The Dame on March 18th, followed by The Louisville show at the Rudyard Kipling on the following night (March 19th).

Hallelujah The Hills is essentially a more cynical animal with a fleshed-out indie-rock post-post-post-Neutral Milk Hotel kitchen-sink agenda (trumpet, Moog, cello, etc). (The Onion AV Club)

The Big Beat Bossa Nova Battle @ Derby City Espresso – 3/5

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Okay, I’ve got an event for you guys that is so unhip it’s hip.

Blake, the DJ of the Wednesday Mod Nights at Derby City Espresso is doing something a little different next week (Mar. 5). This time around, he’s only playing bossa nova, latin, mod jazz, Sergio Mendes/”Girl From Ipanema” type stuff. Basically, all the record store dollar bin favorites, from Harry Belafonte to Brasil ’66, pretty much mellow music that you sip martinis to while you’re wearing your smoking jacket. It’s so the opposite of cool that it could be kind of cool; or at the very least a good excuse to get out on a Wednesday night and play some pinball and drink a couple.

update: Doug might be spinning mod that night as well.

Bret Michaels @ Caesar's Indiana – 3/10

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Bret Michaels, of Poison, and star of everyone’s favorite trashy VH1 show (next, perhaps, to Tila Tequila‘s “Shot at Love” show), Rock of Love, is coming to Caesars Indiana Hotel & Casino on March 10th for the Rock of Love tour.

Poison was my introduction to music at the ripe age of 5, when Look What the Cat Dragged In was released. Blame my sisters for letting me hear it, as a 5 yr old probably shouldn’t be listening to Poison, but at that age any sexual inuendo flew right past me & all I could hear was rock music. I recall having made my very own band t-shirt of poison with the help of my sister after “Open Up and Say…Ahh!” came out, an album which truly won my heart. Nearly every track was simply amazing…from “Fallen Angel” (being my favorite) to “Your Papa Don’t Dance” to “Look But You Can’t Touch” to “Nothing But a Good Time” and the perennial classic “Every Rose has it’s Thorn“…the album was all-around stroke of genius.  By the time Flesh & Blood was delivered I had already developed my music snobbery and, although not all bad by any means, I was disappointed.

I recently learned that the group was inches away from being even better, initially having interviewed Slash for a part in the band.

The show starts at 7:30:00 PM.  Ticket prices are $20, $30 & $55 & can be purchased at Ticketmaster.

The Muggabears @ Gypsy Hut – 3/6

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

The Brooklyn-based trio The Muggabears are coming to the Gypsy Hut on March 6th as though you didn’t have enough to do that month. They describe themselves as playing “a structurally-mutilated brand of noise-pop featuring blissful interplay, sonic experimentation and song destruction” which seems like a lot to digest, but it turns out it goes down pretty easy. Their latest release, Night Choreography, is a beautiful 7 song EP released in April of last year. Expect a smallish crowd, but a really good show at the Gypsy Hut.

Devotchka Brings Gypsy-Punk Show to Southgate House, 5/22

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008
Mad and Faitful telling

A Mad and Faithful Telling is the name of DeVotchKa‘s new album – out March 18th on ANTI. We get a chance to see them live on May 22nd at the Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky. If you are a fan of gypsy-rock music, ala Man Man and Gogol Bordello, then you will like this Denver based-band. They are a little (a lot) more controlled and traditional, but the accordion, violin and trumpet combo will turn the Southgate House into a gypsy-punk tent show. The sound is worlds away from the mile high city and will, no doubt, be an amazing show to see live. I highly recommend checking out the songs below (listed in order of preference). No ticket info yet, but judging from their other shows, it will run between $17 and $23 bucks. We will update show info when it becomes available.

Devotchka- Undone
Devotchka- Basso Profundo
Devotchka- Along the Way

Kelley Stoltz @ The Rudyard Kipling – 3/20

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008
750blog_3747.jpg

Kelley Stoltz is coming to the Rudyard Kipling on March 20 to promote his latest Sub Pop release, Circular Sounds, released February 5th.  Stoltz is a simple and honest songwriter, who has drawn comparisons to Brian Wilson.

Like seemingly all songwriters, Kelley has a song, “Birdies Singing” from “Below the Branches“, has been used in an ad campaign….this one was for Regions Financial.

Should be a great show & nice to see him coming to The Rud.

Jefrodisiac, Richie Panic & VHS or Beta DeeJays @ Fuzion's Really Into Partying – 3/7

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

San Francisco’s heroes & founders of Frisco Disco’s BLOW UP, Jefrodisiac & Richie Panic are playing at Fuzion’s Really Into Partying on Friday, March 7th (hear Black Mountain/Bon Iver afterparty), alongside the VHS or Beta DeeJays.  Jesse & Jackie are working overtime to start bringing some incredibly sick DJs to Louisville.  Laromlab is going to be in town that same week, so rest up this week because next week is going to be a long week of dancing.

BLOW UP has been getting mad hype, including an article in Spin. It’s worth it to come out just to see VHS or Beta DeeJays as well….this show is going to be incredible.

Dan Tyminski @ Brown Theater – 3/15

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

The Dan Tyminski Band is coming to the Brown Theater on March 15th.  Most of us recognize Dan for his updated version of the song “Man of Constant Sorrow” from O Brother, Where Art Thou? I have my doubts, but if that’s your thing, you can take the $25 gamble and see whether or not he plays it.  The show starts at 8pm & tickets can be purchased through KCA.

Review: Over the Rhine @ Bomhard Theatre – 2/23

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Over the Rhine performed at the Brown Theatre on Saturday. Initially the concert was set for February 29th, but due to an opportunity to tour with Ani DiFranco, a chance they were wise to take advantage of, the date was moved up.

Opening the show was the ever brilliant Ben Sollee. I was a few minutes late to the show & was elated to find that I annoyed nearly everyone at the show. Not elated that I annoyed them, but rather that they were so engaged by Ben & giving him their fullest and most complete attention that someone merely coming in late was an annoyance. But for his cello, a pin falling could have been heard. Later, Mrs. OTR even said “He’s going to be huge” although, she said, “He doesn’t believe me.”

Musically, it was much the same as I had gotten to hear at the 930 Art Center, with a different guitarist and a different closing song, “Panning for Gold” which I’d not heard but really enjoyed.

I nearly was not allowed to take any photos. Security, just as OTR was starting, decided our press passes meant nothing, and required further blessing from their walkie talkies. My distress caused me to miss the first song as well as the second song title.

The set up was a really cool one, with round tables up near the front of the stage, but resulted in my having been a little further from the stage than I (or my 50mm) would have liked. Once I caught my breath after the first few minutes of dealing with security and a difficult distance to take a few photos, I was able to relax and enjoy the show.

I was really excited to see OTR as she’d been singing me to sleep for the week leading up to the show. I hadn’t previously heard “Jesus in New Orleans” or if I had, it hadn’t been memorable, but live it was really fun. Mr. OTR was on a playful piano as Mrs. OTR gave a soulful, gospel-like performance about drinking bloody mary’s, backed by an impressive band with an end result that was a very full sound.

Next, Mrs. OTR proceeded to tell us how they’d cornered the market on melancholy, and that the next one “On a Roll” was an effort to overcome that. They dedicated the song to their manager Glenn who had come down from Chicago, but tech glitches threw everything off, so instead they told us a little story about country living. While I enjoyed the hilarity of the story, I wasn’t convinced on the country living part & I think they played that up way too much. They didn’t come across at all as being country & I’m sure it’s part that they did move there to get away from city life, I think it might have been partly too that they were in KY & thought they could better appeal to us that way. I probably mis-read that though entirely.

The story was pretty funny though, about a skunk who attacked their dog who had nudged it & according to his wife, Mr. OTR over-reacts to everything so he tried a series of attempts on its life, from fire to a gun. The moral of the story was that they were tired & should have slept in that morning.

They described their title track as that which as it had been described to them….a jazz hymm….an absolutely beautiful track worthy of the prestige of the album title. Juxtaposed with the beauty of Trumpet Child was a song Mrs. OTR described as the “trashy song I wrote” and she looked strangely sexy standing on stage with her guitar. The track was very funky & was far and away the best song of the evening if not on its own merits then for what it became. The bassist started into a solo, picking away at that huge thing in front of him and making it very fun, funky & danceable….but then the drum solo started. This drummer isn’t the kind of drum like I mentioned recently with reference to Phantom Family Halo who can pound pound pound the drums…he was definitely more of a finese drummer. Don’t take that negatively…..this guy was NUTS. Far & away the most impressive drum solo I have ever seen…so agile, so fast…such amazing technique. He was able to twirl his sticks and drum in a rhythm I could never have dreamed of.  For 5 minutes I kept turning to my girlfriend saying “Dear God…Did you just see that?”

For “Hello Ohio”, a song about going home after not being there for a long time, the husband/wife pair switched spots as she took the piano & he took the guitar which was nice to see that everyone in this band is an overall musician, capable of playing any role. Furthering that, on “Crying Out Loud”, Mrs. OTR really showed her voice range and how strong of a voice it is, as she roared out a beautiful meld of gospel, funk, folk, soul & jazz.

A goofier song, much further down the setlist was “If a Song Could be President” which was a great tribute song to so many brilliant musicians through the history of folk music, some of my favorites being that John Prine would lead the FBI, Tom Waits would be the Secretary of the State & Bob Dylan would run the UN.

Their affinity for Tom Waits continued into the next song as the entire song was inspired by seeing him at the Louisville Palace a few years ago. The song essentially described tom Waits & was sung by Mr. OTR in a very eery voice reminiscient of something Tom would do.

I was really impressed with this show.  I would highly recommend seeing OTR if you’re into folk/rock, particularly so if you’re an NPR kind of person as I think it would be right up your alley (as it was mine).
